Comment: I once had a conversation with a girl. We were talking music and which songs you love to makeout to. She said "Barrel of a Gun" by Depeche Mode. You've gotta love the all American girl who's got something deeper going on in her head. And the fact that she's picked a song that REALLY showcases the existential dilemmas of troubled lead singer David Gahan's descent into drug usage and subsequent recovery. A throbbing dirge that gives you a true feel of a subculture's underworld, this song is a must. Brooding and evil, showing the power subtsances can take over us. And a great song to makeout (or just dance) to.

Interestingly enough, I saw DM the night before Dave Gahan's overdose.

But yeah, this song is definitely something to get it on to. ;)

That whole album makes me miss Alan Wilder.

I concur...they've become more experimental since...

You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to disagree...and I do.

Just to be sure about the timeline here, Alan left in 1995. Since then they've made Ultra and Exciter--and I'm trying really hard to see any experimental element to those records. Are you sure you're not thinking of Vince Clarke? He left in 1981 and they definitely got more experimental after that. The only experiment they're doing right now is how to make a record while expending as little effort as possible.

Ultra I think is a wonderful album by Depeche Mode. They made seismic changes from Pop to Rock. It was there when they made Songs of Faith and Devotion, but that album didn't seem complete, it was as if they were hitting the walls, and they were still discovering themselves. But when Ultra is an incredible maelstorm in discovering the simplicity and complexity of a song.

Songs of Faith and Devotion might sound a little stifled, but that might have had something to do with the band disintegrating while recording it. It's still got the best sound of any DM record. It was the last record where they evolved their sound. I think that had everything to do with Alan Wilder. iTunes has part of one of his albums--search for Recoil. Drifting and Stalker are a couple of my favorites.
