What happens? Well...what happens is that a rift in the space time continuum appears and sucks you in. That is what happens. :D

There is nothing technically from keeping you from doing this. The disks will work.
However, you are violating Apples EULA -- even if you purchased a Family Pack because the GF does not count.

Unless you bought a family pack (which entitles you 5 installs for macs residing in the same household), you only have a license for 1 install on 1 computer.
Ethically you are stealing and should purchase another copy for her.
Technically there is nothing stopping you from putting it on more than 1 mac.

The family pack lets you do this for $199 I believe instead of spending $129.99 x 3.

psh. nothing.
do not think twice about it either.
ive installed leapord, iwork and ilife more than 10 times each. nothing happened:)
leave it to apple to tell you you can only use your cd once.
so even if you delete your comp you have to buy another.
smart marketing. stupid concept.

Your understanding of the license is incorrect. You are only allowed to have it installed on one Apple computer at a time. If you erase your hard drive and/or buy a new computer and remove it from the old one, you are free to install it again.

If Apple were in the music business I suppose I'd have to buy a different CD depending on whether I was a single guy or had a family that were going to listen to it. Kind of like erecting a toll gate in the middle of the desert, isn't it? I mean, does anyone buy a family discount? Why? Because Apple say so?
Yeah, I know, sidetracking towards political concepts...

ya but you are still able for it to work. as i have deleted mine only 3 times and have leapord on 7 other macs along with ilife and iphoto, and did the same on tiger (which i dont know if they said the same)
but legally i understand, only 1 at a time in use.

Perhaps you also bought it with a real, steady income via a stable career. Some individuals are students with barely enough money to function but need a mac for educational necessity. But I guess they should spend the extra $125 (after student discounts, since Family isn't discounted) to install on multiple macs they own , or their fiancee's device, etc. Not that hard a concept to understand either, eh?

You're telling me you'd feel guilty if you bought a single user version, then bought another computer and used the same copy? I suppose you'd go and buy another single user or sell the single user on ebay and buy a family pack. Good on you. I'm sure you'll get into heaven no problem.

Okay, so I am a student and don't have the funds, then someone should give it to me for free? Don't think so.
Imagine going into a restaurant and eating dinner, then telling the manager/waiter/owner, I'm sorry, but I cannot pay. But that's okay, I am a student and need the nutrition to function but cannot pay?
Simply amazing.

OS X EULA: So I know that a family pack is 5 licenses under the same roof. Does it say anything about having to be a "family" though? I'm married with only one Mac so it has no baring on me. But I am curious. If you had 4 roommates and you all lived under the same roof, could you buy a family pack and would it still be legal under the EULA?

What's that got to do with anything? When you buy a mac it comes with a licensed version of OS X. No-one forces anyone to buy Leopard: If you can't afford it then you simply use the version that comes with your Mac. There are plenty of things I'd like but can't afford, so I just don't buy them - I don't expect someone to give me them for nothing, and I certainly don't rip them off...

I don't see how complying with an EULA is somehow being self-righteous. I wouldn't feel guilty in your scenario because if I bought a new machine (as I did with my Air), it would come with Leopard on anyway so there would be no need to buy another copy. If I bought a second hand machine without Leopard and only had a single user copy in use on another machine, I would indeed buy another license, because that's what the EULA specifies you have to do.
BTW I'm an atheist so Heaven doesn't really figure in my plans a great deal. I am, however, a software developer who has suffered loss of income through people breaking EULAs so I would never do it to another company...

Yes, that's legal. As you noticed, it says nothing about actual family relationships, that's merely a marketing label.

I'll be upgrading to Leopard soon, and I will buy the family pack, for three reasons
1. It's the honest and decent thing to do. That's something I value, YMMV.
2. At the moment Apple doesn't seem to aggressively pursue software piracy of this nature. Doesn't mean they might not start tomorrow.
3. I have a recurring nightmare where Steve Jobs shows up at my house and beats me mercilessly about the head and neck with a G4 iMac before banishing me forever to the M$ Express Train to Computational Mediocrity. ( My doctor said the meds would stop the dreams, but I know he's a liar!)

Sooo... you can't afford the $125 price difference for the family pack, but you can afford multiple Macs? I can't put my finger on it, but something seems awry here.

Why if you are so "poor" do you need multiple Macs then? Come on, if you can afford multiple computers you can afford the family pack .

I heard that the last time this happened ( sharing a single user license Leopard disk with another person) a black helicopter landed on that person's front lawn... Five Steve Jobs jump out... beat the person senseless and took away all their Macs...
Then again... you don't have to listen to me.

Really? Perhaps you received a notebook from your parents, and along the way needed a more powerful machine for Graphic design / video editing? This is not an uncommon situation, I'm sure you feel holier than thou because it's easy to afford and you're in the situation. But I guess you're right, the average student is only 20,000 in debt. We should kick them in the ribs a little more, if possible.
And for the record, I never said that person was me, I'm speaking hypothetically here in defense of others. It's attitudes like this that make bitter cynics out of fine young people.

While I'm not in favor of kicking anyone at any time, I fail to see what this has to do with the issue.
Graduating from college owing $20k, but with a degree that opens up limitless possibilities in your life is a GOOD thing. I owed more than that when I graduated, and still consider my college years as the best times of my life. We students were poor as church mice, often stayed up all night studying or finishing a project, worked odd part time jobs, and had the time of our lives! I feel so much more fortunate than my high school friends that didn't get to go to college because they couldn't even borrow the money.
Besides, it's not like 10.4 Tiger quit working when Leopard was introduced! AFAIK at this time Tiger will run any app that Leopard will. Even Panther is good for most things.
And by the way, when I went to college we poor kids used spiral notebooks, while the rich kids had mini cassette recorders. If you needed a computer for anything, you went to the schools computer lab and queued up. Somehow, we managed to get by.

Yeah, because students are the only ones on the planet that are trying to make something of themselves and have no money? Hey, your being a student is great, trying to make something of yourself is a commendable goal, and not having as much disposable income as you'd like is unfortunate. But I am always dissappointed when people use being a student as an excuse for anything. Every student is in a different situtation and should not just be grouped into one entire bundle. If you really want to buy something and need it, student or not, I'm sure you can come up with a way to pay for it. And you may even learn an important life lesson in the process: that sometimes things are worth earning.

So students should get a free pass to break the law, while the rest of us need to comply? I don't think so.
The right thing to do is to buy the family pack if you want to install Leopard on multiple machines. Apple also sells a family pack version of iWork (and iLife, too, I think).
If you get a student discount on the single user license, then buy two instead of the $199 Leopard family pack.
What you choose to do is up to you.
