View Full Version : 1 or 2 memory chips in 32GB Touch?

This is the yet to be answered question. Personally, I think there are two 16 GB chips because Apple can reap some major volume discounts by using 16GB chips in the iPhone and the 16 & 32 Touch models. Others say there is one 32GB chip. I have searched high and low for conclusive proof one way or the other and have found nothing. Come on iSuppli! Get with the program!
Anyway, has anyone managed to figure this question out?

I'd really like more than "I've heard" like a direct quote from a reliable source or even better, tear-down photos.

Believe it or not this is not conclusive enough. While I completely agree with it and there are even photos of the 2 8GB chips in the 16GB Touch, some argue that for some reason on the 32GB iPod Touch, it makes more sense to use a single 32GB chip and leave the other spot empty. I think this is baloney but my position is just as much speculation as theirs at this point.

8GB (Since launch) - 1 chip (1X8GB)
16GB (before San Francisco 2008) - 2 chips (2X8GB)
16Gb (after San Francisco 2008) - 1 chip (1X16GB)
32GB (since launch) - 2 chips (2X16GB)

This is not a tear-down of the 32GB Touch. This is still not proof that the 32GB Touch has both locations filled. That's what I am looking for.

yes, but it proves that there is room for two.

I agree with this. Do you have a source?

Ture but few are arguing that point.

Hi,
After reading the chip configuration of the current 16GB Touches, I was wondering if you can upgrade the chips to make a 16 (with two 8's) in to a 32 by adding two 16GB chips?
Secondly, can you get the chips?
Thanks

Do you think you have the expertise and want to spend the money for the equipment needed to desolder and solder those tiny connectors? I think by the time you have bought the chips and paid an expert to switch them out, you would have been much better off selling yours on Ebay and

I wasn't aware they were soldered on!
Just a question, no need to jump down my throat!
Thanks

Sorry about that. I guess I am a bit touchy (no pun intended).

No other company other than Sandisk is using/making consumer(for DAP) 32gb chip i.e. one chip that is 32gb. If Samsung was making that chip the iphone would be at 32gb right now, but because of space it is stuck at 16gb max.
