Comment: An incredibly uptempo start to my favorite Miles Davis album. This album is often overlooked because Kind of Blue immediately followed it and overshadowed it with it's use of modal soloing, but this includes one thing Kind of Blue does not: Cannonball Adderley. Trane and Cannonball weave in and out of each other in a frantic race, trading 8's and racing madly alongside Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones & Red Garland. Miles' solo is fast & boppish in the vein of Dizzy Gillespie or Clifford Brown, something Miles rarely did on a studio album (although he often showed off live). Paul Chambers' arco bass solo is especially stunning; he pays homage to "Slam" Stewart, who always used the bow to solo, and showcases his extremely powerful knowledge of the blues, even at this very young age (he joined Miles Davis when he was just 19). You can't go wrong with this whole album.
