For starters, I like crunchy peanut butter best. But besides that, I think jelly is just too boring. My favorite additions are (not all at once, usually just one at a time):
Banana slices
Apple slices
Pear slices
Marshmallow fluff
Carrots
Celery
Mini pretzels
Bacon

All very good options, however I am a peanut butter purist. Only peanut butter in my sandwiches and nothing more! ;) :D
And absolutely nothing beats the taste of freshly ground organic peanut butter. Besides the superior taste it is far healthier for you as well, which is much more important. None of those additives and crap, much lower sodium content, it's all good baby.

Almost true, but I'd add chocolate. What I like to do is put peanut butter on both slices and put chocolate in the middle and then put it together and toast it. Mmmm... Can't do it too often though, as you might guess, it has a few calories ;)

As long as the peanut butter is this stuff:
http://www.britishfooddirect.com/images/42-WE_NAS_Peanut.jpg
I'm happy.
When I wasn't veggie, a spicy pepperami I seem to remember went quite well. Also, when I was a kid, my mum would insist on the addition of salad to sandwiches, hence I don't mind sliced tomato because it reminds me of being a kid. But nice bread and good crunchy salty peanut butter is where it's at.

this should be the 11th commandment.
Thou shalt not savor any peanut butter accompaniment other than the goodness of marsh mallow and sliced banana.

Reminds me of the comedian I saw on TV recently. Big guy talking about what he really thought was a great idea would be to take a doughnut thats right out of the oven and injecting it with frozen yoghurt :p Mmmmm..
Ok, now we can get back on topic :p

Oh, I forgot about Nutella too - basically chocolate but has a slightly different taste. And I do agree with others, natural peanut butter is best. I want to get a food processor though so I can make my own homemade peanut butter. I had that once and it is far superior.
Grilled peanut butter sandwiches are delicious as well. It brings it to a whole new level.

Usually just peanut butter. My two favorites are smooth Smart Balance and Cinnamon Raisin by Peanut Butter & Co. The latter is so delicious. Google PB&Co - they have a few other flavors, including one entitled "The Fire is On".
If I do add toppings (rare -- peanut butter is just that good on it's own), they are: banana, honey, raspberry jam (sweetened with juice, not sugar), nutella, or fig jam. Erm, not all together obviously, but you get the point.
While I don't grind my own, I have not regretted my move to natural peanut butter. It can take a few tastes to get used to because regular peanut butter has you trained to think it's sweet, but it's so worth it.
Has anyone tried peanut butter and bacon? I've heard good things.

Not on its own, but the Elvis (peanut butter, banana, honey, and bacon) is delicious. But it kind of masks the goodness that is peanut butter, so I keep my toppings simple and only use one at once.

PB + honey + 5 minutes left alone for the inner plane of the bread to absorb and become stiff with the honey.

Yes. Lightly toasted bread can help the average PB sammich achieve excellence.
I like PB&J a great deal. Mixed fruit, grape, or homemade mayhaw jelly on my sandwich please. Has to be lightly applied though. I want to taste the peanut butter, not the sugary jelly. Honey is nice too.
Off to my kitchen.......

Bananas. Then you spread the outside with butter or margarine and fry it in a pan until golden brown.
Elvis loved them and although I rarely have them, so do I.
