For what? Milk? Yes its nice semi-skimmed.

While I chose 2% (as it is my preference), my wife is both lactose intolerant and allergic to soy; thus I've been having rice milk in my cereal for at least 3 years now.
Rice milk is actually ok, and better than skim IMO. As for milk alternatives I'd rather have almond milk over any other kind... it's really good, but practically double the price of rice milk.
Oh and to make sure I don't loose my ability to digest lactose, I make sure to nip down to the food court at work and pick up a 500ml carton of 2% chocolate milk about once a week. :)

I have no idea what percentage UK milk is when it is semi skimmed. It might be 1.7% or 44% depending how you set the scale.
I love chocolate milk

Where's the choice for "ew, gross, none of them, sick!"
Weird, in the same day a thread about peanut butter and a thread about milk - the two foods I despise most...

I pretty much grew up with skim, so I can drink it and not be disgusted like some people. My father recently became lactose intolerant, so we almost never have milk around now anyway. He tried Lactaid milk and soy milk, and said they were both nasty.
I suppose if I had to pick milk to buy, it would probably be 1%.

LOL! He does indeed!
I should state then when I feel the need to "drink milk" (e.g., float some Lucky Charms), it's 'Lactaid Milk', 2%.

1% or skim for me, although generally I'm not much of a milk drinker; in fact, I can't remember that last time I had milk when it wasn't in a bowl with cereal.
And although I have it rarely, I do enjoy silk soymilk (especially the chocolate!).
...And where's the option for strawberry milk?

Skim, Soy, and Chocolate.
I never drink regular milk though, only for cereal.
I read somewhere that the chocolate in chocolate milk prevents the absorption of calcium...

Breast is best!:D
When it was just me and the misses in our old flat we would buy two pints of semi-skimmed milk and it would go out of date a week later.
Now that no.1 son is on the scene, we go through loads of full fat. I bought 12 pints just before Christmas and had to go out for another 6 between Christmas and New Year.
Heaven knows what it will be like when no.2 son comes off the breast.

I like six ounces skim with two ounces strong mocha java coffee, nuked.
And cereal for supper on a hot summer night, with super cold skim milk.

Very timely poll, for me at least. I've always been a big fan of milk, and have been drinking pretty much exclusively skim milk for about 20 years. For the past 7 years we've been getting milk delivered from a local dairy that doesn't use growth hormones.
Having said that, my wife and I have just recently begun looking at soy milk as an option. By recently I mean "this week". And I have some questions.
1. Does it really taste that bad? I mean, I love milk. I hate the soy milk. Tried some almond soy milk and it was marginally better, but I had to make a smoothie to tolerate it. I see recommendations for Silk, so perhaps I'll have to try that as well.
2. Is it that much better for you? I've read some things that it has less cholesterol, but pretty much the same vitamins, etc. as milk. Once I really started thinking about it, drinking milk from a cow does seem a little odd. Of course, drinking "milk" from a bean doesn't seem much better.
3. Is there a good unbiased source of information/comparison between the two?

1. it doesn't taste bad at all to me. i use the plain soy milk for all my cooking needs and it works just fine. i think it tastes just like milk. and they have the absolute best chocolate milk
2. much better for you? well its a bit better in some respects. no cholesterol, but yes still vitamins such as calcium obviously. drinking milk from a cow is weird, which is why i switched to soy.
3. i'll look.

One of the healthiest foods you can consume is RAW whole milk . . . If you have access to that, why in the world would you give it up for a factory-produced concoction of chemicals called "soy milk"???
As for "odd," humans have been consuming cow (and goat) milk for thousands of years. In some cultures, this the mainstay of the diet. What's odd is consuming a "food" (and I use that term loosely) that was invented in a laboratory within the last couple of decades. For the most part, the factory production of foods has not served us well when it comes to health and nutrition . . .
As for the health "benefits" of soy, these are associated primarily with fermented soy products (such as miso, for example). Unfermented soy products (such as soy milk and tofu) are more likely to be associated with health problems. Want to know more? Do a google search for "soy" and "estrogen" - and then decide if this is something you really want to be putting in your body.
Is there a good unbiased source of information/comparison between the two?
There may be good sources of information . . . but I doubt that you'll find unbiased. Just try to evaluate the credibility of what you find by considering both their expertise and their financial interest in what they are saying. And keep in mind that there's no big money to be made in raw milk - so there's also not going to be a lot of money going into research to prove its benefits . . . . And, yes, all those studies that say pasteurized or soy milk is best have to be paid for by someone - and who do you think it is?

Never used to be a big milk fan - think it was the room temperature whole milk at school that put me off. Putting it next to the radiators was a bad move.
Now I like it. I tend to drink semi-skimmed as a compromise between fat and taste although I do love whole milk when it's hot - adds an extra creaminess.
I especially like a big glass of semi-skimmed (2%?) when I come in from the gym or from a run. V tasty... and, I read somewhere, better than those isotonic glow-in-the-dark drinks for replenishing the body.

The fact that "Chocolate" is on par with "2% Semi Skimmed" has to show we either have:
Alot of grown adults heavily reminiscing about their past
or
Worse... ACTUAL CHILDREN, OF THE SCREAMING AND BREAKING THINGS VARIETY
I've already begun boarding up my screen, they might come through the internet tubes
I'm quite bored...
Do a google search for "soy" and "estrogen" - and then decide if this is something you really want to be putting in your body.As with everything, there are pros and cons to every food. I'm not replacing everything dairy and meat in my diet with soy products, I'm adding a small amount of soy to my diet and replacing a similar amount of milk.
Most studies I've seen show that soy in moderation is highly unlikely to cause any health problems in otherwise healthy adults (for example, I don't have an iodine deficiency), while potentially providing significant health benefits.
I'm not sold either way, but I'll continue to do additional research. I agree with the point that we have to be careful about what we're eating, and at this point I wouldn't give my children large amounts of soy as most indicators are that it's not good for them.
But that could change next week. ;)
As for Raw Milk, certainly there appears to be some interesting research pointing to the health benefits of raw milk. Unfortunately, it's illegal to purchase or sell in Illinois, so you need to join a farmers co-op and arrange to get it that way. It's also prohibitively expensive right now.

i used to drink 1/2 gallon (≈ 1.9 L) of organic whole milk everyday. not only i found that my bod seemed to recover faster, i also felt greater strength when i was lifting. for post-training; however, i believe that you'd need low-fat chocolate milk due to its near ideal protein-carb ratio and simple carbs.
