Apple released a Security Update for Mac OS X Panther (10.3) today:

Security Update 2003-10-28 addresses a potential vulnerability in the implementation of QuickTime Java in Mac OS X v10.3 and Mac OS X Server v10.3 that could allow unauthorized access to a system.

WOW, a security patch for mac!

What is this, the first in 3 months??

Maybe they are just trying to make the Windows users who just switched with Panther feel more at home.

I know there's a workaround for the iTMS DRM using QuickTime for Java. I wonder if that is the "Unauthorized Access" they're talking about?

Went smoothly... but, if you type when a text cursor is active when screen saver is running, soem characters will appear on the document. I don't need or use this, but I'm glad it was updated.

If you type when will the characters appear where? Can you please explain? Your sentence is quite unclear...

I just updated... and got freaked out at what i thought was going to be a problem.

After the Apple logo appeared, the screen faded to blue and then....

nothing.

waited some more and more nothing.

waited for about a minute and still nothing.

so, i forced-restarted and the same thing happened again.

CRAP!

resarted again... and same thing.

Called Apple tech support and while on hold, my computer made some wierd quiet chirping noises and then started to boot into the desktop.

Tech support told me to try restarting again... (reluctactly I did), and...

works fine now. (restarted again to make sure... and no problems)

that was scarry.

After installing this update I happened to look in my login items and I now see a (God I love Expose) System Events. I looked yesterday and it wasn't there. Did the update do this? What does it do?

I haven't done the security update yet and I have "System Events" in my login items. I noticed it there after I installed Panther, so for me at least it's been there since I installed Panther. I'm not sure what it is though.

<<EDIT>>Looking at Apple Discussions, it appears to be something that allows scripting in the User Interface. It doesn't appear to be a new thing in itself, but at least for me it never used to be in my login/startup items.

For those surprised at the speed of the update, remember that Apple released a security update for Jaguar immediately upon release.

I don't have "system events" under my login. Did you guys do a clean install or an upgrade install? Sounds odd...I don't like having unknown things running in the background. It always makes me pause whenever I look at Activity Monitor and see 40+ things running in the background.

Wow this has got to be the lamest update ever. I turned on software update and started the download on my slow-as-hell dialup modem, expecting to be sitting here for another hour, when like ten seconds later, it tells me that it's done, because it was only a 100 kb update. This is totally the worst update ever. If updates were always this easy, I'd have no excuse to stay online all the time.

If things continue like this, I might just have to switch to Windows.

Hehe just kidding...

I think the size that I downloaded was ~590 kb from software update. On the same note, it still keeps telling me that iMovie and iPhoto need to be updated even though I have the latest versions of both.

I did an upgrade install. Maybe it's needed for people who did the upgrade as opposed to clean install?

I just noticed that my restart times are now longer after installing the security patch. I wonder if it is the patch or something else, but I restarted twice to make sure...the first time too forever (nearly 30 seconds) and the second was still longer at around 16 seconds than what it normally was prior.

Running 10.3 upgraded from 10.2.8

No problems at all nothing like COS described it went blue for like 5 seconds and then went black then the Apple logo appeared and it booted right up no issues here at all.

I did not notice any bootup time differences.

That's weird, mine seems much improved....(not only the actual loading of OS X, but also it's Unix core)....does anyone else's exposé seem to be more linear now though? I liked it the way it was an now it either lines them all up or puts them in each corner of the screen...before it used to be dice-like arrangements like x's for five windows....i've only used it in ie but it seems like it will do it for the rest as well....not sure why a security update aimed for quicktime would change my exposé...

Now Exposé is being more normal...guess window size directly affects it...

It's still the same, at 85, as the GM version is.

Speaking of Expose. I found something I didn't like about it. Open Safari then Cmd-N multiple new windows, say 15+. As the new windows open they should open in a straight line horizontally.

Now engage Expose just for Safari (F10). Notice how they all line up in a straight line and if you have too many they're positioned in front and behind others? Something I think should be addressed in the next update. I already sent in an enhancement request.

There are security issues with versions prior to 10.3 see: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44719

When trying to download it from the apple
site I get: SecurityUpdate2003-08-14.dmg

So what is going on??????

Did they pull it or what?????

The same thing happend with 10.2.8 update.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if they did pull it. It broke Java on my machine. Now no Java apps run and it generates a message in the Console of "HotSpot not at correct virtual address. Sharing disabled."

This is an extreme bummer for me because I'm a Java developer. My applications won't run.

Java works fine for me after installing the security update. In fact, it is really fast, I was surprised since Java on my old computer was painfully slow.

I'm guessing 1.4.1 since that is what it says in the Java folder in my utilities folder.
