Hi, I'm on the fence as to whether to get a 7200RPM 200Gig or 5400RPM 250Gig Hd for my MBP. Could any of the owners of the 7200RPM drives let us know how loud their HD is and how their battery use is going with that. Thx

My Hitachi 7200-rpm drive was loud enough when parking the head (which OS X sometimes makes it do in intervals of 10-20 seconds with no end in sight) that I replaced it with a 320GB 5400-rpm WD Scorpio and never looked back. Quieter drive, greater capacity, no significant difference in battery life that I can see, and in all honesty the speed difference is only minimally noticeable for all but a small minority of uses.

I'd really like to get some more replies as I'm having a very hard time deciding.
I'm leaning towards the 5400-rpm 250GB drive because I use my Mac 90% at school and it needs to have a good battery life and I can't stand any extra noise. If anyone could confirm this or the opposite, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I had a 100G 7200 rpm Hitachi in my 15" MBP before I swapped it with a 320G WD 5400 rpm drive, and I can't tell a difference as far as noise level or battery life, so I don't really think it makes a big difference.
If it is, the difference is incremental...

I have the Hitachi in my MBP, and it's not loud at all. This is the quietest machine I've ever owned. My last laptop had a 100GB 7200RPM Segate drive, and this is MUCH quieter.

Thanks guys, now I'm starting to lean towards the 7200-rpm 200GB drive.
I guess I'm having a hard time deciding!
The ones here who have tried both 5400-rpm and 7200-rpm, is the speed difference worth getting a 7200-rpm?

Is this in the new macbook pro thats using the hitachi? I was wondering about the drive noise also. Do you have the part number of your drive so I can check it out?
Thank you

Mine isn't loud at all. I have whatever Apple put in mine. I barely know it's there.

I'm getting such varied messages from yes it's loud to no I can't even hear it that I'm more confused than before. How about this, has anybody used a 5400RPM HD in maybe an older machine and how does it compare to the 5400RPMs on current or past MBPs?

If you are thinking of going with a 7200 rpm drive vs. a 5400 rpm then it is definitely worth it. The 7200 rpm is much faster. The Seagate drive tends to be the loudest of them all. If you are going with a 7200, I would try either Hitachi or Western Digital. I haven't had any problems with noise on those. Seagates however, while they are great drives they do tend to be a little louder than your typical hard drive.
Good luck!

If you end up with the Hitachi drive, you will never notice it. My 200GB 7200RPM drive is, well, dead silent. Even when its getting pounded by Aperture or another intensive program I never hear it.

I hear this "parking" sound every 30 seconds or so. Almost like a very light winding of a clock. Annoying.

i cant hear any noise coming from my 7200. Can anyone tell me which ones (brands) apple uses and where we can find out which we have? Which were supposed to be louder?
But ya mine is quiet.
My friend has a dell 1530 and it makes a constant clicking noise whenever the HDD is in use lol, that thing is the furthest thing from being quiet...GJ Dell lol.

The Apple-supplied Hitachi 200GB 7200 is refined, not silent - but no louder to my ear than an external WD 2.5" 320GB 5400.

i have the new MBP with the 7200 rpm, and i can say that i have pretty much next to never heard it. I do all video work with huge files and 3d work; and still i have never really heard it. I have a few externals, a WD 500g, and a little WD 5400 rpm and they are both much much much louder.

I have the Penryn mbp w/ 200gb 7200rpm, and I don't even notice any sound coming from it unless I put my ear right up to the machine. Even then, it's just a quiet hum.

Definitely quieter than my old mbp. And compared to the Powerbooks I have, "HA!" is all I have to say.

As far as I know for standard 5400 drives Apple still uses Fujitsu. As is posted above, the 7200s are Hitachi's. If you want to see which one you have, go to :apple:, About This Mac, More Info, then find your hd on the device list and locate it's model #. Then just google the model #.

I just replaced the (broken) 5400 Maxtor 60GB drive in my G4 iMac with a shiny new 7200 Hitachi 80GB - I'd say the new drive is quieter.

Mine 7200 hitachi was bit noisy, I think might be mine hard drive problem so i upgraded to 320 GB western Digital 5400 rpm hard drive and i hardly notice any difference.

What about the battery life, how long do you get using a 7200rpm drive compared to a 5400rpm drive?

Is Apple using a brand of 7200 RPM HDD other than Hitachi? I would really like to know.

DUH...............j/k, but what do you expect when you use one large drive instead of 1 or 2 externals? that's why those new drives are going to be a little smaller in gb size but have two thicker discs inside instead of three thinner ones making is a lot less noisy. i think i was reading about a hitachi drive when i found this out.
so if you want a quieter drive, sell me yours, i'm in the market for a 7200rpm 200gb+ drive. pm me.

Put a Seagate 200gb 7200 in it about 4 months ago and do not hear at all.
Battery life appears unchanged.
As quiet at the old 5400 drive it replaced.

I'm running a Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM HD in my 17" MBP and mine is definitely super quiet. In fact, I'm sitting on my couch in the living room at 12:30AM and I can hear the fan running on my HD-DVD player 6 feet away louder than the HD in my laptop. If someone would really think this is loud, I would ask them to have their head checked to put it nicely.
