WWDC Predictions!

With WWDC looming upon us I think its time for some predictions! Could it be iPhoto? 10.2? or soemthing else cool? Well put your predictions here. Only 5 days left! There is something brewing!

OSX.2 is what I think......

Maybe Steve will demo the eMacs and TiBooks...... or at a push maybe an updated iBook, but I would have thought they would have upgraded those along with the eMac and TiBook this week if an update was imminent.....

I expect OSX.2 but probably no new hardware, I think new hardware will be reserved for MWNY....... iPhoto uprade, same with iTunes.......

But as Apple has proved on many occasions...... we never really know what to expect!! :D

And that is just the way I like it...... ;) :) :D

I agree. New software of some soft makes sence for the WWDC. Developers should be given the newer OSX as well as any other software updates.

On the other hand, if the newer OSX doesn't manage chip usage, and a new chip is coming out that would require developers to code specifically for it, then at a minimum, announcing a new chip would also make sense.

It would be hard to develop for a company if you knew a new chip might be coming out that would make your current development unable to work on the new machines.

I reckon that OSX.2 will be demonstrated + released at NY (MAIN NEWS). Also, there will be a new piece of music software or video conferencing software. Also, Quicktime 6 will be released to the public.

This is one of those questions I have for everyone saying G5 G5 G5. If the G5 really is a 64 bit chip that means that developers would have to write new code to specifically use the 64 bit instructions. It would make NO SENSE AT ALL for apple to just spring that on their developers by releasing hardware with a 64 bit chip without getting their developers in line beforehand.

Even if they are only 64-bit extensions in the same way that AMD's x86-64 works, you would still need to recode to take advantage of them. And look at how long the x86-64 instructions have been available for developers - years before the chip was set to appear.

Another example was the Altivec unit. Apple gave everyone a real good heads up long before the G4 actually shipped so that developers could write to Altivec.

What makes people think Apple would just release a G5 without any of this necessary preparation?!?!?!?

Most likely either the G5 is not a 64-bit chip, or it is well over a year away.

And to be honest, I'm not that bummed out by this as everything I've read about IA-64 and x86-64 seems to say that 64-bit chips are great for databases, but not a real performance boost for other things.

I think we'll see new ibooks, iphoto and X.2. Every product (hardware) in apple's line up has gotten an update except the ibook. Unless we have forgotten the ibook is apple's second biggest seller. Therefore apple must update it to keep consumers happy

this seems the most plausible to me. basically following suit with the imacs.

you think they'll put g4's in the 12.1 ebook? or would they wait for that for some separation...? either way i think that would make sense. allowing for a cheaper educational laptop, along with the more consumer minded ibook g4... who knows when though

I would think Apple WANTS to put the G4 in the eBook, but can they do it and remain competitive in the education market? Probably not at this time.

as with the old imac, i think they should have a low end ibook/ebook that they are able to keep at the lowest possible price while still having it as updated as possible.... that is, if the g4 in it will make it too much, wait. once they can put the g4 in it but keep it at a great low price, then do it.

same with old imac. update them as often as they can while keeping the price. if that means being 2, 3, 4, 5 steps behind the current emac/ibook then fine. some people just don't need and/or can't afford the higher stuff.

The 12.1" iBook (eBook) sells for $1099 to educators. That's about the right price point.

I can't believe educators are buying any 14.1" iBooks for $1699, so add the G4, improve the screen, and sell it with CD-RW for $1699 to everyone.

those prices sound pretty good then. i had never looked for the educational ibook price, as i haven't been in the market.

1099 seems very reasonable for an educational laptop... of course it could always be cheaper according to people who'd buy it. but that just has to come with time. they can always buy last year's model for much much cheaper...

g4 14" sounds good. though i've seen some people complaining about the 14" saying it's not as good? what's that all about? i haven't really seen either of them enough to compare...

I don't think there's a real doubt that X.2 will be there. Here's what it says on Apple's WWDC website:

"During the week of May 6-10 in San Jose, California, WWDC 2002 attendees will be the first to explore the powerful new capabilities of the next major release of Mac OS X. And that's just for starters."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The iBook will go to a G4 before Apple anounces the new chip. I find it highly unlikely that they would have three generations of chips in the marketplace. It makes no sense. I think that's why they made them bigger, as well.

I agree on the software part, but are you on crack? Speed bumped PowerMacs two months apart?!?! Not a chance in HELL Apple would ever do that.

what makes you think that apple haven't announced it to key developers (adobe, macromedia, etc...) already? I'm not saying that the G5 is going to be released at WWDC (having a laugh!), but isn't it fairly normal for apple to keep their partners up to speed on developments?

How about x.2 preview, a formal announcement of the emac and tibook so people know it exists...no new hardware except a possible ibook...nothing else except the wait to MWNY..

It' a terrific time to be an OS X User. It's just amazing to watch how this Operating System evolves over the time.

I think this is going to be a great year for OS X.

The best thing that Apple could do is enable ALL core technology and tweak it as much as possible. Developers would surely appreciate this.

They have to make this OS the ultimate Platform for Games, Music, Video, Java, Streaming Services and Office Applications.

It should be:
FAST
CRASH-PROOF (It's almost 99.9% there) :)
EFFICIENT
PRODUCTIVE

Users should be able to enable/disable GUI stuff that they don't want, to concentrate on their work and not waiting till the window gets finally minimized.

I can't wait until 10.2 comes out.

So the WWDC will focus on 10.2. I don't think Apple would release new hardware or upgrades to exsisting computers during the WWDC. That would wait for MacWorld New York.

I agree, but I think Apple would release them both (G4 iBook & G5 Powermac) at the same time then to avoid having the product line spread over three different processors. The ibook would be one of the early things spoken about at the Keynote, somewaht low-key due to a lack of any huge jump in clock speed, then the G5 would be the, "one more thing...". Of course, no one would actually see the G5 machine for a couple months but thats when the orders would start coming in (and G4s still available at a discounted price for a limited time).

I also think they could avoid narrowing the gap too much between the ibook & powerbook by keeping the ibook at 600mhz when they drop the G4 in. Thats still pretty close to 667mhz, but they could bump the Tibook in Sept. and hold off on speed jumps in the ibook until January.

But I don't see any of this happening until MWNY.

(I plan to buy an ibook in Aug/Sept but I want a G4 for OSX, as my girlfriend's 600mhz iMac is too slugish for me. I'll keep my B&W G3 450 on 9.1 for now, and probably forever since its a dedicated ProTools box and its performance has been great and, most importantly, reliable.)
