Is there any free way to back up a DVD (that I legally own) in OS X?

Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/?article=details) is a popular choice for converting DVDs. :)

mactheripper, dvdimager, and disk utility will enable you to make a backup clone of your dvd to a dvd+/-r dl ... there are no free dvd compression programs for mac os (that i know of) so to burn to a dvd+/- r will cost money for software... mactheripper also costs money if you want to be a "private beta tester" and use the latest builds since the free 2.6.6 version fails on many current releases... that being said i much prefer using windows with boot camp using ripit4me with dvddecrypter, dvdshrink, and imgburn or occasionally using dvdfab hd decrypter in place of ripit4me when it fails (all free and never failed me)
