View Full Version : Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts

Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.
Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."Basically, distribution is as follows (stolen from Wikipedia):
Ghosts I, which contains the first nine tracks, is available for free online. The entire album in DRM-free formats can be downloaded for $5, a double-CD can be ordered for $10, a deluxe edition can be ordered for $75 (includes 2 discs, 1 data DVD, and a Blu-ray disc with Ghosts I-IV in high-definition 96/24 stereo and accompanying slideshow), and a "ultra-deluxe limited edition" can be ordered for $300 (includes all in the $75 release as well as 4-LP vinyl, and two exclusive limited edition Giclee prints. Limited to 2500 pieces, numbered and signed by Trent Reznor).
Ghosts I-IV will be released physically via RED Distribution on April 8.
The album is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license.
Reznor wrote that "More volumes of Ghosts are likely to appear in the future."
Finally, a band that has the right idea when it comes to distributing music!
Get it at http://ghosts.nin.com
Their server is getting HAMMERED right now, but you can obtain the first disc from some various torrent sites. Trent (or someone affiliated with the band) uploaded it to 3 torrent sites which I won't name as to not risk getting in trouble, but one of them is a certain type of bay, one of them involves breakfast food and the other one's name usually begins a question. But you can download it from one of those sites without feeling guilty since NIN themselves uploaded it
I got the first disc off a torrent site and am listening to it right now (and it is pure awesomeness) and am trying to buy the downloadable version from the site for 5 bucks, but I can't right now since the server's getting pwned. I'll keep trying. I've already cleared out spots in my car's CD changer for this :D
And, on a final note, even if you aren't a big NIN fan, I encourage you to buy at least the digital download for 5 bucks. Other bands may cut ties from the greedy pigs at the RIAA and follow this distribution method if it's successful for Nine Inch Nails. This could be the best thing to happen to the music industry in years.

I'm willing to bet they make more money off $5 as a free agent then selling it for 14.99 on a record label.

Good for Trent Reznor - I'm looking forward to hearing this. Nice to see Adrian Belew lending a hand too :)

Managed to get through after numerous tries.
I'm not a NIN fan, but the preview sounds interesting, and $5 is not much. I would be at least supporting this distribution method.
EDIT: I'm having problems downloading the file....
Is anyone else having a problem unziping the file? I downloaded the free sample which contains Ghost 1. When I click on the .zip file Archive Utility automatically opens and tries to unzip the file, but it fails. I also tried the most recent version of Stuffit, but that didn't work either

Simply download the OFFICIAL torrent off the pirate bay.org
Thats what i did, and i got speeds of up to 325kb/s
Very cool. I am seriously considering the album, i will listen to Ghost I, and if its any good, will buy the rest, due to the generosity, and lack of greed that the band exhibits.
Props to bands that are still in it for the music and fans, not the excess cash.

Seems to work perfectly now, after they shut down the site a few hours for maintenance. Almost finished downloading 600 MB, and it's only been about 40 minutes since I started.
I think now would probably be a good time to download :)

My download kept cancelling through Bit Torrent, saying I didn't have permission or something like that. That's okay, I don't mind paying $5 for the album download!

Holy crap. My call has been answered. Instrumental all the way...
Im sorry but this is just f***en incredible. Could this be the future? (The niggy stardust poor $ performance was, IMO, because the album wasnt that great)
$10 for a dual disc album, which I can DL in multi-formats (FLAC EVEN!) right away, as I await shipment and arrival of the physical album.
$5 for just the download!
boils down to $5 for 2 discs and $5 for the DL.
$75 to be able to remix with high quality multi track files, plus the neat case and artwork, thats pretty cheap (i guess...)

I downloaded the whole thing from a torrent site, and I will be purchasing the $10 set. I loved the first free tracks so much I had to have it all. I couldn't wait. This is awesome. Trent describes it as a soundtrack to daydreams, and I know just what he means. Another masterpiece.
BTW, they sold out of the 2500 $300 album sets, equalling $750,000. That's 3/4 of $1000000 in about 24 hours. That's $31,250 per hour. Not a bad job, if you ask me :)
But seriously, get this album. It's incredible, sort of ambient on some tracks, and gripping on others. It has grown on me during the past day.

I bought the $5 but the server problem meant I couldn't get the files. Got the torrent to tide me over, I'll download my lossless files in a day or so once it is a bit quieter and more stable.
Good album from what I've heard so far at least.

I downloaded the mp3 version, no need to take up that much space on my computer since I don't have a super high quality stereo nor am an audiophile. I'm about 35 minutes in, loving every minute of it. To be honest, I am not the hugest NIN fan, but I really love Ghosts. It's more of a composition than album/double album in my opinion.
EDIT: If server problem persist in getting the official paid download and you don't mind a slightly lesser quality mp3, Amazon's Music Download store also has the complete album for the same $5.00 price.

Much better than the last couple of releases.
It does remind me, a lot, of Nils Petter Molvær in places.

D/L in 15 min. Of course it's nearly 2am on the West Coast so that's probably not "peak hours."
Assuming there are numbers released it'll be interesting to compare this to the "In Rainbows" experiment in terms of success. We could see more established, successful acts doing things like this, but unless you've spent a decade or two building up a fan base of millions world wide and raking in the $$$ then a "self release" like this probably isn't a very viable option.

Is anyone else's copy glitchy?
Some tracks have bursts of static and then silence (but if I skip past the static it plays). Other tracks play about 1 second and then skip to the next track.

Nope - it seems fine so far.
I downloaded Apple Lossless - then used 'Max' to convert this to mp3/lame at around 180 to 250kb/s.
The lame mp3s from the ghost download are pretty high bitrate for most converters... that might be the problem?

One the one hand I love this stuff, but on the other, more cynical, hand. It sounds like a bunch of 1/2 completed tracks. I have 100s of bits and pieces like this scattered on various HD.
But, like I said, I love it.

Absolutely.
I think the "Free from record labels" NIN is going to be very interesting. Trent has always kept fans pretty close to NIN; with the Garageband downloads, the remix site and The Spiral.
I'm hoping he'll continue to make his output available in all the ways he does now.

Thanks. I'm not sure what was going on with it. Either it wasn't done, or I somehow got a corrupted file.
In any case, I just went ahead and bought it. This time the download worked and everything was fine. I listened to the whole thing last night. For now, there aren't any stand out tracks that make me go  But it's all good stuff. I like the individualized artwork for each song.

I downloaded the free first 9 tracks, loved it so have no got the $5 version in AppleLossless format and loving the rest of it so far (up to 16 Ghosts II so far).
I really appreciate the extras too, the high quality wallpapers in standard and wide-screen are a great little bonus! I want to support this as a way forward so thought about buying the $10 version with the 2 physical CD's but realised I wouldn't use it!

This album is just phenomenal. The concept behind it is very clever, and the "marketing" that's gone along with it is shrewd, and really quite brilliant.
Musically, it's one of the best things I think I am going to hear in 2008. So good, infact, that I spent £18 on the 2CD set (the $300 box had run out by the time I'd gotten to the site :()

Hi all, I downloaded the full compilation and loaded to i-tunes. When I playback on my 30gig video ipod, the original track order is not preserved. It jumps from 1 to 13 to 28 to 8...
Anyone else experiencing this or have any solution? I'd like to hear it in the order it was arranged.

so, I guess I fixed the problem...in the settings>shuffle option on the ipod. so...anyway...

Ever since you mentioned Creative Commons to me, I love it :) (I had seen it before, but forgot about it). It's a very sweet project/thing, and I now have a some rights reserved tag on my Electronic project which I am doing basically the same way as this album, except I am offering it for free and not asking for a donation (But I did receive one!). Hopefully, I'll be able to help this form of marketing a little bit.
As for the album: I love it! When I first started listening to NIN, I never paid attention to Trent's instrumentals (I was around 12-13), but as I got older (also conveniently as I got more into jazz and orchestral music), I developed a love for instrumental music, and this album was absolutely great. Even if it was just 2 hours of not-thrown-together crap, for free, it's hard to beat. This time, I even said "no" to the free download, grabbed ten dollars, and not only donated the $5 to support this form of marketing, but went back to Saul Williams' site and donated $5 for his effort as well, even though I hate the album. Anyways, great stuff, can't wait to see where Trent goes from here :)
