Well. This may be akward. But ill start off with me being the owner. Im a student at A highschool in Toronto, and well being the only one in the High School being A MAJOR apple freak inc. Apple Logos on my locker, "The Works" ... I had to go to the states to get an iPhone. So I set up a day with my Dad, and he said alright, lets go... I went over the border to the Apple Store In the Walden Galleria in New York (Buffalo). I Purchased it. I left Canada @ 8:30 & Bought the iPhone @ 8:45, lucky me no cops were watching the speed limit & YAY for GPS. We were there ON TIME. I didnt have a hard time purchasing the iPhone. I went in and got out. It was simple actually, didnt ask to many questions, i just said it was a gift & that was it. Well I arrived in canada on Sunday Morning EARLY @ 1:20 am... went through customs... payed $60 CAD for taxes. & left. Still sealed in the box arrived at home, & COULDNT WAIT TO UNLOCK IT!. But went to sleep. I woke up turned on my Macbook Pro, started independence & volia did all the good stuff got it unlocked. Well had it everyday working. iPod & on Fido. Was wonderful, brought it to school the next day & BAM everyone, was in AWE. I couldnt help it I told some people but the word spread SOOO FAST. Everyone asked if they could see it. It was like Macworld ALL OVER AGAIN ughh. I enjoyed the fame =). Well after a couple weeks the opening of leopard arrived, I brought it with me to line up @ the Eatons Center, took some pics, & an apple employee was handing out water & decided NOT to give me one simply because i HAD AN iPHONE. I reported it to the manager, he apologized and I received extra shirts on that Launch Day.! I had dropped my iPhone in the Store and it had a dent EXACTLY by the earphone Jack. Making it unique from every other.

Well Now ill skip to the actual "STOLEN" part of the story.

So @ our highschool we have a Winter Activity day in which we go to various places eg. skiing, snowboarding, skating etc... I chose skating.. we went to Nathan Philip Square that day. It was a Awful day for me. Well i skated on ice a couple times and just played around with my iphone, opening txt msg's, Making Calls to other peers etc etc... Someone must have seen it, seen me playing with it. Well the day was coming to an end. I sat on the outside bench removed my "rented skates" and in the process, someone behind reached into my side & took my iPhone. (I DID NOT NOTICE THIS AT THE TIME), well i returned my skates and i realized that it wasnt on me! I WAS IN AN PHASE that i couldnt explain, it was my "baby" & someone took it. Well we looked and looked me and 20 other kids there, but other people from Toronto were there also. So i accepted that it was gone, but made a phone call to my phone # & normally it should ring & go to my "Answering Machine" but it didnt - in reply it said that the customer is NOT available. That ment that whoever took my iPhone had turned it off. UGGH. I was soo sad that day.

I came home... parents were, well what can we do its gone... eventually they said it will pop out. So everyone @ school had an eye out, and i became so big the principal got involved and made an announcement and a group on Facebook was made called iHelp, it was for the comfot for me and my gone phone. I was actually getting donations as well, but didnt want to take it, was to sad.

Well this may seem weird, I purchased my 16gb iPhone on ebay, because I didnt want to drive to the states again and well after a few day I checked on craigslist for my "Stolen 8gb" iPhone... well guess what? IT WAS THERE, MY IPHONE WITH THE DENT & NO BOX AND HE PROVIDED THE SAME CASE AS MINE A "HOLSTER", we emailed him but he said it had been sold, he removed the ad, & well we found out where he lives his ISP provider his cell # all that, & gave him a call & told him we know that you have sold a "STOLEN" iPhone, he said no i bought it 7 months ago & blah blah blah... its mine i know my baby when I see it. Well ill post screen shots of the ad, because he removed it...

Well that basically it my story so far...

Any Questions?

Should I Post any updates, if any come out?

here are the pics.... (below)

How can you be 100% sure its yours? Mine has dents on it too from dropping it, as does many others :-/

Wow dude. That sucks, I can't even imagine what I'd do. Except call the cops now that you know who he is. The cops should be able to prove that the iPhone is yours by matching the credit card transaction with the apple transaction (their files) which will include the unique serial number.

listen to the 1 post in the thread that says that if u still have ur box with the serial # on it and if u get the cops to trace down that iPhone and bring it back to u so u can see it..... if it has the same serial #, then he can get arrested for selling stolen property!!!!
DO IT!!!!

Crackin' up :D

But seriously.....OP, that's a horrible experience, but can you be 100% the phone in those photos is yours? How common is the case? Surely dents on iPhones aren't uncommon? Surely there are plenty of people in a place the size of Toronto who got themselves iPhones, from whatever source?

But if you're still certain it's yours move hell and high water to go after this guy. Go to your local police station and get some advice, do whatever you have to do - pursue the guy to the grave....I would, but then I'm a vengeful so-and-so. :)

You are so pathetic. How the Hell is using a phone flashing it? can you explain that one to me? The fact is that his phone was stolen and who ever did it is a pice of crap. The Iphone is a very wanted phone and is sure draws a lot of attention specially in countries where is not out yet. That does not give anybody the right to steal one.

I hate to say it, but you are just a little too immature to be owning a 500 dollar phone. Those of us who do own them (and live in Toronto, which there are many of despite your claim) treat them with cautious pride and would not pull them out play with them in just any old place. Let alone be skating and reading text messages.

As for the person stealing your phone...unless you have valid proof , i.e. your name is engraved on it, the phone company has your IMEI on record and you can prove that is the IMEI of the phone, then you have no recourse. It is called hearsay and the police will not do anything about it.

Now if you have decided to rally the troups and "roll" the seller for stealling your iphone, then that just reinforces your imaturity. But I then have to question how exactly you managed to get an ISP to reveal someones personal information when basically it takes a court order to get them to turn over that kind of information.

Now it seems to me that you have little concept of money and that your parents will buy you what you want, with the proof being that you just bought another one on ebay, albeit a more expensive one. The fact that you were racing down the highway with little regard as to whether you got a ticket and the fact that you have a gps in your vehicle (which I know are not that expensive, but are a luxury none the less) are all clues to how money means nothing to you. Now if you would like to debunk my claim, let us know what high school you attend. I am betting it is not BCI.

Take it as a lesson learned and maybe you will be more careful with your next phone.

you're absolutely right!

young high school kids with expensive and impossible to get devices should be able to brag to their friends and use their $500 phone on a skating rink anytime and anywhere without having to worry about someone stealing it. since all people are innately good.

you make absolutely no sense, man.

Impossible, maybe for you, some of us just work hard and earn our gadgets. Where on his post do you see him bragging ? He took the phone to school and he drew attention to himself. It does happen just like when the first iphone showed up at work. So what?

This could of happened to me a 29 year old while i was at the movies with my family. it could of happened to anybody not just a teenager. I love how everybody like to pass judgement and automatically assume things.

There's been a lot of theft at my school lately and now they're banning iPods due to the amount of parents complaining about the theft.

I, for one, am shocked by the number of people in here who bought an iPhone and yet NEVER USE IT IN PUBLIC.

You only use it at home? Right next to your computer? Talk about a waste of money. At least the kid who got robbed used his iPhone for a few months. But it's the people who never use their phone that have really lost out.

The only one in Toronto to have an iPhone... wouhahahahahah, that's the best one today. There is thousand of iPhone in Canada, even Yellow Pages in Canada made a special web page for iPhone. I drove a few years one of the first new model of Mercedes Coupe, it's fun to flash but there's a price to pay. My girlfriend saw me with an other girl in my flashy car... hihihihi, I couldn't argue, it was the only car like that in the area.

Um, there's a person I just quoted who might be a likely candidate:o...

All the people who chimed in with the advice that you shouldn't show your phone in public.

Unless they've found some way to use their phone while it's still in their pocket...I hadn't considered that.

i can agree with some things said, and i'm SURE there's plenty of people in toronto with iphones, it's just that the OP is in his high school world, and it might be hard for some of us to remember that in high school, you just don't know. it's not his fault, it's just the way it is.

anyhow, to people saying he was "flashing it" or about not pulling it out anywhere... i don't have an iphone, but in the end, it's a phone. if i get a call or a text, i'm going to pull out my phone, 95% of the time, whether it's my current lowly razr or an iphone if i get one. otherwise, why have one? it's like getting a porsche and being too afraid to take it out of the garage because someone might take it.

The kid is in high school- so if no one else in his high school has an iPhone, that means that no one else in Toronto has an iPhone.

So, did you call the cops, OP? WHat if anything happened?

If you reported it stolen, there is a Police report. They should should invetigate. Did you report it to Apple? They can lock out the IMEI (even if it is NOT on ATT).

not all cases are investigated... especially not petty theft with no leads and heresay.

Did you report it to Apple? They can lock out the IMEI (even if it is NOT on ATT).

apple doesnt have any control over the phone once it leaves the factory, and at&t doesn't have any control over the phone after it leaves their network, or if it wasnt on it to begin with.

who are they going to tell to block the IMEI? magic fairies?

I live in Southern California and I've seen a handful of people with iPhones and I still hide mine. I know that there are tons of people out there that steal iPhones, not too long ago someone broke into my car and stole my iPod that was an old school mini, it was at least two years old. I also have a $600 camera that I keep locked in my trunk if I'm not using it or a tight grip on if I'm out on a shoot. I guess your parents never taught you to take care of your things. Didn't you know that a lot of people would love to have an iPhone, even if they sell they'd be making full profit off of it.

Any way now that is out of my system, I have a question for the people that don't void the warranty on their phones: If your iPhone was stolen, would Apple or AT&T replace it? Just wondering. :D

I'm not going to take this any further, but really... do you judge all people this way?

I wouldn't call that judging. That's just him stating some facts mixed with the opinion of most people that have had to work very hard for what they have. I had to pay for my own iPhone and I worked my a$$ off to get that money. Same with my camera. I guess there are some people in life that take money very seriously and others that clearly don't, I.E Paris Hilton. But if the kid was mature he wouldn't have been showing it off or playing with it while doing something that would out his phone in danger (like slipping and falling and dropping your phone on ICE)

I don't understand why you wrote a run-on paragraph that didn't contain a thesis statement. I also don't understand what the purpose of the post is. You didn't ask any questions. All I get out of it is that you want sympathy. You've already bought a new one so... most aren't going to be sympathetic. I guess you just want your old one back so you can sell it on craig's list and stiff your dad. You have no one to blame but yourself. No the police aren't going to help you, SIM card based phones get stolen all the time, you have no evidence, and they've got better things to worry about than someone who can afford 2 iphones.

It took me 4 months to save up enough extra cash to be able to purchase one on launch day and I'm not poor by any means, I just have more important responsibilities. Work for your money, then you may appreciate and take extra care of your high priced items, never let them leave your sight, and not intentionaly boast in public to those who are less fortunate.

All that being said, I'm sorry for your loss, I'm not heartless. But, I still don't understand why you wrote at length about it. The story serves no purpose and is full of rhetorical statements.

This whole post was started by a previous post by the OP that said "Customs. What does that mean?" And people asked him to tell the story, so maybe I shouldnt be so hard.....

it's like getting a porsche and being too afraid to take it out of the garage because someone might take it.
I think his situation would be more like driving the porsche through the hood all day and then leaving it running with the keys in it at the kwick-e-mart. Well... not the greatest example.... most people cant drive stick, but you get the idea. ;)

My first car? It was given to me, and I beat the crap outta it, and I left it running all the time.
My car now? I paid for it and I baby it more than anything in the world, no wreckless driving, avoiding bad roads even if it takes longer etc., and I'd never leave the keys in it.

I feel your post man. I also saved for 4 months to get an iPhone. Luckily when I bought mine the controversial proce drop happened and I ended using the extra $200 on a good Bluetooth device.

True, money does not grow on trees. Mommy and Daddy may have lots of it, but that doesn't mean you can just waste it.

I have many responsabilities also when it comes to money and still managed to get one o the greatest phones out there. My actions concerning my phone? Well, I take it out in public only when I am called or texted, no other time. If I want to web browse in it in public I make sure I am in at least a respectable place where I am sure theives will have a hard time getting it.

As for the OP, it is true police won't bother with a case of stolen goods where the best informaion you have is hearsay with the theif. However, if you prove via Serial Number and IMEI that it is in fact your iPhone, you can get it back. IF you do get it back, be sure to handle it with more care. If you don't I can identify myself with you as I also lost something of value a year ago.

However, the lesson here that if you want to use it in public places, go ahead, just be sure you can react to any given situation in time. Also, never let it leave your hands, unless its to the hands of your mom or dad or responsible sibling. Don't restrain yourself from using the phone, because you bought it to use and its not fair that you restrain yourself. Just be wise when and where to use.

My two cents...

Wow, so the poor guy's iPhone gets stolen and Mac Rumors turns in to a lynch mob! The poor kid probably just wanted some sympathy but all he got was a lecture. Tough crowd.

None of us know any further details of the crime because he's been scared away by all the judgemental jerks here!

I'm sorry your phone got stolen, buddy. It's an incredible phone which unfortunately means people are going to try to steal it. I certainly don't hide mine from view, but I also don't let it out of my sight. ;)

Absolutely not, he was not looking for sympathy. He was looking to brag. If he was looking for sympathy, he would not have written his first paragraph, nor would he have mentioned that he was getting another, but a 16 gig.

The thing is this, when it is ultimately your money you are forking out, you have a far better appreciation of the purchase, you treat the item with respect and you keep a tight watch on it.

And if you think the OP is not posting because he is scared of the rebuttal, well this forum is full of adults who have little sympathy for a little boy crying wolf. And he is not getting the response he was hoping for so off he went with his tail between his legs. Am I judgmental? Maybe. But I have worked hard for everything I have and have little empathy to his situation.

Actually, you are way of point here. This poster originally was asking question in reference to customs and the 16gig that he purchased off of ebay. He had stated that his original was stolen and everyone that posted (including adults) wanted to hear the story of how it was stolen.

Now, think back to when you were a 16 year old and you get people asking/telling you to do something...what are you gonna do? Your gonna tell the story!!!

Who gives a crap about you or how hard you worked or how much money, its all a mute point to your post and those that are pounding this kid for something he was asked to do. So friggin what if he is rich or if he was showing it off, its all a mute point...he was asked to tell his story and he did and now all of you are just literally pounding him to death for something you asked for. Get over yourselves, who died and made you gods to rip this kid apart for learnin lessons in life...I know one thing he learned...not to post here because you will get nuked!!! Ok...now you have someone else to pick on :D

<snip>well after a few day I checked on craigslist for my "Stolen 8gb" iPhone... well guess what? IT WAS THERE, MY IPHONE WITH THE DENT & NO BOX AND HE PROVIDED THE SAME CASE AS MINE A "HOLSTER", we emailed him but he said it had been sold, he removed the ad, & well we found out where he lives his ISP provider his cell # all that, & gave him a call & told him we know that you have sold a "STOLEN" iPhone, he said no i bought it 7 months ago & blah blah blah... its mine i know my baby when I see it. Well ill post screen shots of the ad, because he removed it...</snip> I'm sorry to hear your phone was stolen. I know you (rightfully) want some justice, but since that ebay posting includes the charger and ear phones (etc.), I don't think this is your phone.

Tough crowd.I don't think the OP should be too worried, most of the negative posts are from newbies and mainly sniping each others comments. They will learn soon enough to take that crap to the political forums where it belongs. ;)

See, there is right way to tell a story and a wrong way. And this post had nothing to do with customs, nor included any reference to that post. So unless you think that telepathy is a new requirement of registering here, history goes a long way in determining the root cause.

Actually, when I was 16, the internet did not exist in the broad distribution that it exists in now. So there were no forums to post on and no one to ask/tell you to relay your story. And when I was 16, I was busy serving my country.

You actually ask a good question, who really gives a crap how hard I had to work to earn my money. But then to the same point, who really gives a crap that the kid lost/had his phone stolen. And even more to the point, who really gives a crap about what you have to say. It's all relative. And true it may be a moot point (which is the true spelling). But I have to ask, is your asking him to tell his story just cause for him to embellish beyond the believable.

Anyway..to end this entry. No one made me God, as no one did you. And you will not get "nuked" for no other reason than the fact that no one likes a blowhard. Oh, and I am not picking on you, you were just foolish enough to make thin statements directed towards me. :)

He is a 16 year old kid...so why don't you teach him how to tell a story, not degrade what he said and more to the point, I am not the only one that stated he posted this in request to his other thread, so you knew or you just didnt care and wanted to flame him as others have as well.

And at 16, how were you serving your country? This is one I am truly curious about. So you were the perfect good little teenager? LOL...we have all bragged about, shown off or just plain been a teenager when we were 16, so that is all a lot of hogwash if you are saying that you were not a typical teenager.

Obviously...you gave a crap as you responded and I accomplished my goal. I rest my case, you teach me how to spell, so why can't you help this kid out instead of degrading him? I am sure the others, to include myself, asked him to tell his story out of curiousity which is really not that uncommon...the point being, why should he be pounded on for doing what he was asked by quite a few posters?

Never claimed to be god nor would I ever. Who is the Blowhard? You are the one that just dumped on this kid, I am just giving you a little back of what you dished out...doesn't feel so good does it? It matters naught to me whether you think I am foolish or not...I accomplished my intent! Oh...and since you like to correct spelling or grammer usage, take a look at your last sentence that I made bold:eek:

You reap what you sow :)

i'm still amazed by the amount of people who claim they're so cautious about where they take their iphone out in public. i have a touch, which to 95% of the public at a few feet away is indistinguishable from an iphone (most people that see it ask if it's an iphone, when i say it's an ipod touch more than half don't know what that is) i take it out anywhere that i think may have wifi, any time i need to access any info or photos on it, or when i'm leaving a store and i dig in my purse for my keys. maybe i'm just sheltered and live in an area that i'm not thinking at any moment i may be jumped for my ipod, but i think that's how it should be. it has nothing to do with bragging or showing off or flaunting, it's a device i got to USE and i plan on using it. if it were an iphone i'd have it out probably three times as much as i do now.

i don't condone buying children expensive (unnecessary) electronics but if that's what his parents want to do (or him, i don't think he actually stated anywhere that his parents paid for it, just that his dad took him to the store) then that's their prerogative. i grew up in an area where kids are handed BMWs and range rovers in high school, never asked to get a job, handed credit cards for abercrombie shopping sprees, $150 a week allowances, it happens. some people want to be able to spoil their children.

i missed the initial thread, but i think he made it clear in the first post that people asked for the story, so the thread seems applicable, if that's truly the case.

anyhow, everyone think back to high school, way back if you have to ;) it's a fashion show, it's a big show and tell, i remember getting the silliest thing and having to tell everyone i saw, i think back now and cringe. you want the world to be your soapbox when you're 16.

ABSOLUTELY!

If I could have found the words I'd have posted exactly the same. There's been an extraordinary reaction from some folk on this thread to this young guy's story, they appear to be revelling in his bad luck simply because he appears to come from a comfortable family and his parents appear to have been generous enough to buy him the damn thing in the first place - BIG DEAL! Good luck to him, I'm glad he comes from such a family and not some poverty-ridden home where his mother can barely afford to feed him and his father's in jail!!!!!! Is that what some of you would like to hear?

Pathetic.

That the hell does "pwnd" mean?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn

Pwnd is a word that somehow, very unfortunately, made the transition from the language of retarded narcissistic "script-kiddies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Script_kiddie)" into gaming, intelligent forum discussion, and even into real life. People who use this word should be ignored completely, as their comments generally have nothing intelligent to add to our society whatsoever.

Oh reeeally?! Pwnd, pownd, pwnt, powend...might I go on clarissa?

Well, I like to use the word only and only if I am in a game or with close games playing a game; example of that might be Super Smash bros, which off topic as it may seem, comes out March 9 and is long awaited.

I just don't get the appeal of words like this, and other "1337" words. It all comes from typos, or replacing letters with numbers. So by using them, a forum user or gamer just makes me think that they suck at typing and don't care to proofread, or want to make things almost illegible for no good reason, and that they're proud of it.

Please, I'm open to having my mind changed by your 1337 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1337) h4x0r wisdom, but until then I'll just ignore your obnoxious kind completely. Clearly I'm a n00b (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbie).

go to the cops with your investigation! maybe they'll sort something out for you... dont lose this chance!!!!

and if it's bought 7 months, it would have the old bootloader 3.9. (ach, i see your week number is 39). otherwise you could've say that it's got a new bootloader and theres no ways you can get 4.6 on week 39.

you've got a thin layer of film on the screen, see if you can get hold of the seller again. use it to identify your phone. the seller woudnt probably remove it. he might do a full restore to wipe out the data, ask him to give you the IMEI on a pic... well i dont think he'll do that. also see if the seller is NEW or a trusted seller.

if you DO have concrete evidence speak to your parents and go to the cops tomorrow!!! but i dont think you can do much though. that must've been so heartbreaking for you. and i'm so sympathetic...

ps. im also an apple freak, im the only 2 out of like 550 people in our school that has the iphone. good luck!!! and to all iphone users, especially not in US/UK/DE/FR dont flash your phone in front of everyone!!! keep your phones in a zipped pocket or elsewhere you know it's just not reach and grab!

you're so understating it there. we're so not sarcastic.

I'd like to add some more to this, but let's not attack them - as normal people won't do that. they usually are kids who are "very enthusiastic" about computer stuff, also japanese cartoons better known as "anime". the word or phrase "pwn" is generally utilised by the young teenagers, an example would be comparing computer specs: A: I got a new computer! B: that totally pwned mine! they also observe each other's downloading progress (fact). this is basically a summary of who uses "pwn"
