View Full Version : iPhone Texting Plan?

Well I got in trouble today for going over my texting. So my parents are making me pay my own cell phone bill, I knew it was coming :/ I'm gonna get an iPhone 8GB and I wanted to know how much my bill would be.

So far I know I'm getting the cheapest Individual iPhone Plan which goes for $59.99.

Then I am definitely getting the Unlimited Messaging plan but thats where I'm having problems with. I know on any phone its $20 for unlimited(that is for AT&T) but I guess its not for the iPhone. Below is a picture of what I am talking about.

If I were to be an existing customer then I would already have a $59.99 plan without texting and stuff. If I were to buy an iPhone then I would add the $20 for Data and then $20 for Unlimited Messaging? I don't understand that.

Then If I were a new customer then the plan of $59.99 would already include the data and then I would just need the $20 Unlimited messaging right?

Sorry If it sounds confusing, but any help is greatly appreciated!:D

Yeah thanks for reminding me of that!

But I resolved my own question! lol

It's actually $40 on a regular phone and $60 on the iPhone because of the data already being included. It makes sense because adding $20 data to the $40 plan is $60.

That makes them equal(both $60)

And I want unlimited texting which is $20

And thats $80 without taxes.

Now all I need is an iPhone. But I have to wait until my Birthday (March 26):(

You're exactly right. I've got an iPhone and my bill is about $80.79 every month - but that includes the 1500/month plan. If I upgraded to the unlimited plan, I'd expect to pay $90/month.

Enjoy your new iPhone - you'll love it :)

Can you share minutes with your parents family plan? That way you can just pay the $50 in order to get an additional line with unlimited texting and data?

If you are anything like my kids, you probably don't use many minutes...

If you have to get your own complete plan, then you are looking at $59 for the bas iPhone plan with 200 txt's and then $20 to upgrade to unlimited txt's, plus about $10 in taxes. Like the previous poster said, that is about $90/month.

I use about 400 minutes a month and I text like crazy. :D My parents have Verizon and currently, so do I. They don't plan on changing carriers because they like Verizon, but I like AT&T and I would be getting my own individual plan under my dad's name. Basically, I'm paying him for the cell phone bill since I would be using it. I don't have credit history because im only 15, thats why it would be under my dad's name.

This is insane...I remember about 4 yrs. back when I was only paying $25 max a month for 600 minutes, unlimited nights & weekends, and 300 texts. Now we're paying like triple the amount :(

Honestly at 15 an iphone is overkill. I know its cool and you will probably enjoy it a lot but thats an expensive phone to buy (or receive) when at that age some sort of damage would come to it.

Not that this will probably change your mind but it would be smarter to get a cheaper phone and save some of the money that you use for the nice iphone and really expensive plan to save for later on when you might want to buy your own car or gas etc.

Just a thought.

I'm not buying the iPhone my parents are for my birthday(then I'll be 16). I have a job and I will just be paying the monthly bill. I've been through many phones and I've taken care of them really good(hacking is the only problem). I don't plan to Jailbreak my iPhone either. I just will use it for the iPod and obviously the phone.

Oh and yeah I see where you are getting at as expensive. It is expensive, but I want a good phone, one with a lot of features. I've been looking at a BlackBerry Pearl or Curve and the Treos and stuff like that but I want an iPhone since it's Apple. I don't know, I'm just Apple-obsessive. Plus it will work great with my MacBook :D

The iPhone plans are really only $20 more per month than a regular phone, so it's not THAT much more than a cheap phone, once you get past the cost of the iPhone itself.

It's too bad you cant convince your parents to switch to AT&T - that would help alot...

I think it's great that you are paying for your plan yourself though. It is impressive to see someone your age finding a way to pay for their own iPhone.

Good luck!

Very true. I understand the need for hot technology. And I am glad your going to pay for it yourself. Just know there will be always something better around the corner and in being honest with yourself at 15-16 you really do not need email on the fly, or tons of the other features. But they are neat to have. Just think is the value your going to get out of the phone worth what your paying. At your age there are tons of needs/wants and blowing your budget on 1 phone may not be worth it just to show off to friends.

I just think you may eventually see the iphone or other PDA (which really focus on work related help) as overkill for your current needs. Think instead of an iphone you could get a sweet new iPod and a new other phone and still not have to pay a monthly plan on it.

Personally I hardly use as many features on it as it has available and it is indeed overkill.

That being said if you understand all that and still want the iphone go and enjoy!

I think 16 would be the perfect age to fully enjoy the iphone's functionality. When else do you have time to sit around browsing the internet on your phone (except during college) as well as have all your devices integrated into 1 (less to lose, more expensive if you do). Its a fun device without full fledged functionality of a PDA.

My sister has an iPhone and she doesn't use all the capabilities. I know I will though. I just have time in my hands to check my email and stuff like that. I find it easier than turning on my MacBook just to check my email. I love using Safari, for internet on the go, its the best I've seen on a phone. Also, come to think of it, the iPhone doesn't have that many capabilities. The Phone itself and the SMS can be found on any phone. It's the same with Safari or internet, you can find it on any phone. It has a camera, which phones don't have one, and all the other apps are just for use. The only app I won't be using is Stocks, since I don't have any stocks :D

Why do people text messages? What is wrong with just leaving a verbal message on an answering machine? lol

Seriously, some of these new gadgets are silly. I think people get so caught-up in the hype, that they don't even stop to think about how ludicrous some of them are.

Grandpa, is that you? Seriously, what exactly is ludicrous about this particular gadget? Or gadgets in general? Please enlighten us. The iPhone is an amazing device that has helped me to run my business better. And texting is awesome, I think it's a great way to communicate. And I'm not 15 either.

Yup. Exactly, even though I'm young. Texting is easier. There are times when you can't call someone or they can't call you and all you can do is text. It might be in, but that's not the only reason people do it.

Person 1: movies, 1010, regal cinema
Person 2: k

That exchange takes barely any time at all. Not only that, but what if this person is eating, or is in class? Surely it's much faster to do this instead of having the phone ring for 3+ rings, leave a voice message, have the recipient not know the contents of the message until they get out of their current engagement, etc. And when you're planning for a large number of people it's easy to sent mass txts. Besides, txting is very convenient when what you have to say really doesn't warrant a whole voice call with all the pleasantry and formality.

With the standard 200 txt message, if you go over it's now 20 cents per (!!!) over message. That's TERRIBLE. Of course, if you get an add'l txting plan, it's only 5 cents. But imo, 1500 is overkill for 15 dollars. Why not an intermediate of maybe 800 or even a total of 400 for 5 bucks extra?

btw the OP is better off getting the iPhone than a regular cheap phone. Not only do you get a cool phone to show off and you're paying the same rate plan as a regular phone, plus get 200 txt message (a $5 dollars savings). Yeah, 400 dollars is a lot of money, but at a young age I think it's good you still have parents to take care of some living expenses. I mean, you're being responsible enough to work to pay for your own stuff, chances are you have a better idea of making money so it's not like he doesn't know how to appreciate money

So people feel that it's somewhat justified in spending an extra $10. Makes business sense.

I have the standard 200 txt plan, and my overage is only $0.05. Has this changed now? I looked all over AT&T's site, but I couldn't see anything that says how much the overage is.

I wonder if you could call get get a 400 txt plan for an additional $5 like you can with the other phones? It might be worth calling about...

AT&T's math confuses me.

The base iPhone plan is $20, and includes 200 texts.
200 texts cost $5/month. (when I had my razr)
$20 - $5 = $15 for data.

Unlimited texting = $20/month.
$20 + $15 = $35
$35 != $40

So... unlimited data and unlimited texting should be $35. But it's $40.

Basically, you're paying for unlimited texts, and 200 more on top of that. Doesn't make sense.

They probably think since you bought the iPhone you can pay more than regular. I just don't get it but I'm sure the iPhone is worth it.

it definitely is worth it. It's nice being able to hop on "real" MR or youtube during Spanish class or Wikipedia during science. Other than that the keyboard is pretty nice too but takes some getting used to. Absolutely worth it.
