Which HD's? The FAST & QUIET compromise.

Hello everyone, my first post here, and I have a real pickle on my hands!
I need to fill 2 mac pro's with "Fast" "Quiet" and "Reliable" Hard Discs.
So I need to strike a balance?

The 2007 MP needs 4-5 Small HD's: for I/O performance & low cost.
The 2008 MP needs 4-6 Large HD's: for performance and lots of storage.

For Large HD's; will any of these fit the bill?
Samsung F1 1TB, WD6400AAKS 640gb, Samsung f1 750gb, Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB, WD7500AYYS 750g?
Anyone using these HD's in a MP? Which is the most quiet? Which are the most reliable? Are there still issues with the F1's? Any suggestions for small low cost HD's?

I have four of the Samsung spinpoint f1 750GB drives. They are very quiet and have been extremely fast and reliable thus far in use with my RAID card.

i too can add a recommendation for the Samsung F1's, i'm pretty particular about noise, and i'm more than happy with the 3 of them i have. In RAID 0 some of the speeds i've achieved have been insane.

Hitachi Hitachi Hitachi.

Great drive. Have the 1TB... had AAM enabled by default... was so quiet I couldn't hear it.

Turned it off... and the drive is much quicker... albeit a bit noisier.

However, Hitachi has a tool you can run that allows you to set the AAM to off, on, or a compromise value between speed and silence between 1 and 254.

Just experiment with it to your hearts content.

My Mac has two WD7500AAYS in RAID0, and my PC has two WD5000AAYS in a RAID0.

Noise level is impressively low and performance is just good (not great).

Couldn't agree more. These are pretty impressive drives that don't compromise on speed or sound.

Any difference in noise between them?
