Does the Mac, by default, have any programs that can handle AVCHD files for editing and such?

Have you tried iMovie?

I use iMovie '08 to edit AVCHD from my Canon HG10. It works great.

I don't even have a Mac, but I just got a new job so I should have a Macbook in a few weeks. Might even spring for the Mac Pro.

That's nice to hear. Was really disappointed after I got a Panasonic HDC-SD5 and found out only a handful of programs under Windows would accept the format of AVCHD- Sony Vegas 8 and Pinnacle Studios HD Version.
