it's not absolutely clear that the iPod could actually handle these specs.

Also, it may drain battery significantly as the hard drive would be in a pretty constant spin while recording. (I assume)

I think it's a good idea on paper, but would you really need to record hi-quality audio with an iPod? wouldn't it be better and easier with a laptop and some pro-recording gear?

I know people want it for band rehersals and such (how many of us are in a band and own Computers? maybe that's the question you should ask) - again, some pro-equipment would be better suited, and portability is not an important issue here (do you reherse on the move?).

And record live concerts? how many concerts do you go a year? so many logical questions should be asked before - say even the technical side of achivability - such as what Arn has indicated.

i've got an iPod, but no. i wouldn't buy a high quality recorder.

i'm not really into the whole 'high quality' thing. 160, or even 128kbps is fine for me.

if i was going to record something (and i do occasionally) i would just hook up my PB. althought a recorder for the iPod would be very useful for PowerMac / desktop people.

i'd want one, i use to use the recorder on my archos jukebox all the time, but now that i have an ipod, i don't. well i would buy one even if the battery life was down to 5 hours, i just wouldn't have it plugged in when i didn't need it.

A stereo 16bit 44.1 Khz line in for iPod would be great!! I've been waiting for one for years.

One "complaint"....... 16bit 44.1 Khz is NOT high quality. It's CD quality. High quality would be AT LEAST 24 bit 96 Khz.

Yes!

An alternative to the Mini Disk would be nice. No wait and no loss of quality when getting the recordings into the computer. A Line/Mic IN would also let you choose your microphones or record directly from the mixing console at live concerts (for our own bands, of course...)

I haven't gotten any of the other HD players around that do this, mainly for lack of mac support and lack of quality, so I'm stuck with the MD for now... And I'm not taking my computer to all my concerts to record with pro gear, it's too risky...

I imagine just as many people would want a mic that can record lectures and meetings as a high (or CD) quality recording device. And I think that the hard drive might not have to spin nearly continuously, because don't the iPods have 24 or 32 MB of RAM to avoid just that? The input would be stored to RAM, and then written to disk in bursts.

Ooh, I just realized that with CD-quality line-in, you'd be able to ... make personal backups (yeah, that's it) of those protected CDs and DVD-Audio discs that won't play on computers. Or have those technologies found ways to hide noise in the audio that gets picked up by such a process?

Voted no, because I currently down own an iPod. Just don't see the need, especially with the cost.

Just a basic voice memo function BUILT-IN will sell me in iPod :)

99% of what I need from a PDA is data retrieval, not entry--and the iPod does that great, while allowing me to enter stuff easily at my Mac. But sometimes you need to capture a quick note or a phone number, and voice memo would offer SOME way to do that without having to carry a pen--and without trying to turn the iPod into a full PDA.

I think everyone has different needs... but this feature would be awesome.. As a songwriter, I can attest that having something small and compact to record ideas onto is invaluable. A great many musicians and writers work this way.. A laptop is too clunky for quick spur of the moment ideas....

I would definitely buy such a device! I'm a jazz musician, and I play a lot with friends of mine. We go to a lot of performances and have a lot of jam sessions. I would love to have an easy way to record all of the music I'm around and all of the music I create. Also, by recording other players, I can transcribe ideas I like, and review performances. If you know anything about jazz you know that the truest creation comes during a live performance.

If I get an idea, I'd love to just record it and come back to it later rather than just write it down. Writing stuff down somehow takes out the purity of thought and you lose the true feeling of the music. Also, by logging my practice on a recording, I could keep track of my progression as I grow as a musician. This device would be great as long as I can quickly transfer the information to my computer (i.e. not real time).

Also, a solution to the battery issue would be to have a seperate power supply for the mic (somewhat like phantom power). You could pop a couple of Rechargable AA's in and there you have it. This might not solve the problem of the hard drive spinning, but would at least allieviate some of the strain on the ipod's battery.

I've been searching for a portable, High Quality, relatively low cost recording solution and have yet to find one. I can't go and buy a laptop, but I could afford an ipod and would buy one if it could do this for me.

in other words, yeah, I don't own an ipod and would buy one if this was available

I put No and I currently own an iPod... but only because I don't have one of these new wham fangled iPods all the youngins got... no dock connector so no audio recording... which is fine...

I was thinking that it'd be really awesome to (for instance) record a class lecture with the iPod, sync it into iTunes, then turn on Rendevous so other people on your school network could listen to the lecutre... it's like taking notes for the whole class!

i wouldn't buy one seperately, because it seems that a line-in should be already built into the ipod. i dunno, i really don't have a specific use for it and would only use it once in a blue moon, so to spend extra money on that doesn't make sense for me (maybe useful for others).

For $50 retail? I'd be tempted even if I didn't need it (currently, I don't). Especially if I was still in school. I could record every lecture JUST IN CASE I noticed something missing from my notes.

But the thing is that a good quality recording device would never go for $50. It should, but it wouldn't.

If it existed, I had an iPod, and the line in supported a real mic and not just cheap computer ones, I would buy an iPod just for that purpose.

this is the most important feature for me to buy an ipod, i won't buy one untill this is possible.
i'd use it to record interviews and environmental noises.
