I have two macs, both with external firewire drives and neither has lost data after the Panther installation. On both of my macs (Sawtooth G4 and ALbook G4) were backed up to the firewire drives so I could perform a complete new installation. Perhaps the problem affects users who are upgrading instead of installing new?

This isn't the case - judging by what I've read on the apple forums.

There seems to be no pattern whatsoever - whatever method of installation they used.

I've got an external firewire drive and haven't had data loss. I cleaned installed. During installation I unplugged the FW drive and everything was fine.

Unfortunately, for some people, corruption occured after installation, even if they did disconnect FW drive during installation.

It's amazing that such an issue didn't come up during the beta test, especially considering that most developers probably have firewire drives connected to their Macs.
