Use of Maps "offline"?

I'm going on a trip to Amsterdam in a couple weeks, and I'm wondering if there is any way I can use Maps without a wireless connection as map to get around the city?

Effectively I'd like to be able to place pins at destinations I know we'll want to get to and be able to use Maps on my Touch as a means of orienting ourselves in the city (I've been there before and am pretty familiar with the city, I just think it would be nice ot have a bit of a customized map).

Is this possible in any way, shape, or form?

I asked for something like this about a month ago - but I was told it is not yet available. I hope someone - sooner than later - decides to make a bit of a modified version of MobileMaps.app that allows for offline viewing of saved maps on the iPod Touch hard drive itself. :)

Yeah - the best I can come up with is loading an image into a web browser (or an image/PDF viewer) and using that.

Will work I guess, but would prefer something right in maps.

Once one download a location and map into maps you can view that map offline. I believe you can only use the one. You can also upload direction from a hotspot and it will be available offline as well.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying - how do you do this? And are you able to zoom in and zoom out?

Would really like to sort this out - if anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate them as well.

While you are in a hotspot (hotel, etc...) Bring up the map you will need for the day. As long as you do not bring up any other map it will be available to you offline.

You can Zoom in and out but it only downloads so much so if you try to go left right or up and down from the map on the screen only a little bit will be downloaded. the rest will just be the grey grid.

If you define a route, all of the route text and zoomed-in maps for each route point are retained for you to step through while offline. (Note it only retains one route.) Cool - this looks like it's my best bet, but it still unfortunately seems like it's going to be hard to store the whole of the map I want stored into maps. :(

I think I'm just going to go the "save a massive image to the disk, open it with local file viewing in Safari" route. No real chance of fail then, and I can photoshop a more customized map.

it does seem to save a bit more info just a route. Jut look all around then turn wifi off. Would be good though, if you could ad intermediate destination to create a bit of a loop that you could use to plan sight seeing journeys
