I have never been to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store, but I set up an appointment for tomorrow. My MacBook is cracking. I am wondering what will happen. When I called Apple, they told me to go to the Apple Store and they would probably replace my MacBook. If this were to happen, would they give me the replacement MacBook like right there or would it ship to my house? Also would it be a refurbished MacBook?

And what do I have to take?

Please and thanks in advance. I'm scared. My MacBook is too young(3 months)🙁

Bring at least the ac adapter and the macbook. If you have everything I'd bring everything, including the box.

They replaced a Macbook Pro for me, but it was after a series of problems.

I doubt you'd get a refurb, you didn't buy a refurb. (did you?)

If they decide they want to replace and they have a suitable replacement in the store they'll give you that. They transferred my data for me while I was there.

Can you explain more about what is cracking?

The hinge or whatever its called. The thing that connects the screen to the bottom piece. But its on the back. It's cracking from both ends and today I was looking more closely and there is a really long crack on the bottom. I didn't buy a refurb, it was brand new but from BestBuy. And I don't have AppleCare yet, but the Apple specialist said the one-year warranty would be alright.

Can you tell us how things turned out at the Genius Bar?

I posted some thoughts on the genius bar earlier today...

I read your post, which was good. But, just a little advice. It's very hard to read something when there are no paragraphs. It makes it tedious and things start to blur together when you are looking at one block of text. I would suggest breaking your posts up into proper paragraphs.

I don't know how you read it when it was like that. It was only broken for about 30 mins, after I made an edit in Safari, which Wordpress doesn't like. Safari stripped all the paras out and made a big blob.

If you have a look around the site you'll notice I use paragraphs quite liberally!

I had pretty good luck at the Genius Bar when I registered for the last appointment in the day. They seemed to be more forgiving and less willing to go through "proper" channels. Perhaps they'll be more willing give you a new Macbook if you are under warranty and it looks like you might take more of their day than they are willing to give.

how did it go?? i have a crack on my right palm rest...just noticed it today. I need to book an appointment with the Genius Bar too. I haven't got applecare either, but i'm still under the 1 year warranty...i've only had my macbook since Nov 07 so thats like 4 months! I really hope i dont have to pay or anything...so...let us know how it went...then i'll know what to expect when i go there.

Thanks...and i hope it went well

Sadly, my appointment was cancelled because it was too full. I have rescheduled for this Friday and hopefully they will do something for a while. My internet connection always drops on my MacBook and it gets really hot, to the point that I can't use it on my lap and it's called a LAPtop.

I'll post again when I go. But for sure, I'm going this Saturday.😀

they will most likely NOT replace the entire computer over an issue like this

in the event that they do, you will get a refurbished macbook

Oh your internet connection drops too? Well that's a new problem🙄

Screw Leopard and it's stupid internet problems. I'm "downgrading" to Tiger.

So I have an appointment at the Genius Bar today at 2:00! I will post what happens. Hopefully they don't take my MacBook in. I can't live without it, especially now that Spring Break started!🙂

My guess is they will replace the bottom case (or wherever the crack is) but they may end up shipping it out or having to order in the part depending on how well stocked and/or how busy that particular Apple store is. I ended up needing a top case replacement on a MB and having dealt with Applecare before on other products I liked the convenience on just calling the number and having them send me a prepaid box to my door which I sent them my MB in and they returned a perfectly repaired MB in (total turn around time of 3 days and I never had to go anywhere). If they cancel on you again I'd try calling it in

Bad news, they said that they don't cover "cosmetic cracks". Since when are cracks "cosmetic". The "Genius" said that the "cosmetic cracks" are causing the MacBook to be VERY hot and drop airport, since the cracks are right near those things.

Yet they can't do anything about it 🙁

I feel like they are lying to me.

But they told me to go to Best Buy and yell at them, because they saw the box it came in and they said that it was damaged because of the box and that I have to be "stern" so they can replace it for me.

I'm going to Best Buy today, but knowing their customer service, I'd said the chances of getting a new MacBook are pretty low and I don't think they transfer the files from my MacBook to my new one(if i get it). Then I will be screwed. 🙁

I don't know what to do.

Help anyone?

Not sure if this will get your case fixed but call Apple (not the local store) and explain your problems. Try to get them to understand your frustrations to the point where they want to replace your cracked case. Get a repair # or whatever the # is called and then take it to your Genius bar or Apple Authorized Reseller.

It's been my experience that when you go to the Apple Store or Apple Authorized Reseller with the repair #, they order the part and start repairing right away no questions asked. It's only when you go to the resellers/local Apple Stores first that they don't want to fix the cases.

I need to see what Best Buy will do first, but if they don't replace my MacBook then that is what I am doing.

Best Buy definitely won't replace it for cracking, but hey you're trying.

Call Apple as stated before, see what they can do.
