Well, many of us are getting the game tonight so i thought i might make a thread for the game so we may exchange Brawl codes.

As you get the game, post your Brawl code and i will keep an active list of players in the OP. Feel free to schedule game times and meetings in this thread as well.

Happy Brawling :)

I've been having the same problem. Out of the hundreds of thousands of people that have probably picked this game up by now, not one single person besides me wants to play a random game? Unlikely.

Not a hater exactly. More like the game was way overhyped and doesn't live up to my lofty and perhaps unrealistic expectations. Maybe I need more time with it, or maybe I need to play with someone older than my 6yo son.:) Not much strategy to be had in those matches.;)

How fast is your internet connection? Wireless B and G bandwidths exceed the typical 3-6 Mb/s connection that most DSL/Cable Modems offer so your bottleneck is usually not your wireless unless you have a weak wireless signal limiting the reliability of your connection.

I have a very reliable 7 meg connection. I was playing last night with pretty noticeable lag late at night with no one else using the connection.

I am planning on going to gamestop this friday and picking up a lan adapter. Is there a way to check my signal strength on my wii? My macbook gets "full bars" but I've heard the receiver for the wii is pretty crappy.

I'm pretty sure the lag comes from N's inability to run an internet service properly, and the way the game slows down for everyone if one person is lagging.. if you have a normally fast internet, I don't think a LAN adapter will help any.

I've read convincing evidence that servers are only used to get you hooked up w/ someone and that's it. It's peer to peer after that.

I am going to get one anyway but first I am going to try DMZ mode on my router (gulp) and that's supposed to make a big difference on your end of the lag.

I think Melee was a much better game over all. This one defintely feels like 'OMG we needz mor ca$h!' It's not bad, but it's pretty much Melee with new levels, online, and new characters. SSB64 to Melee was a big jump in terms of gameplay.

Though I must admit, last night while eating instead of watching tv I just left it on spectate for a couple of rounds :o

I'm only playing between 9:30 and midnight CST most weeknights, weekends are sporadic at best.

...of course it might help if I opened the manual a bit instead of just button mashing at the moment...

If you played Melee at all, the learning curve is virtually nonexistent. I was/am a Luigi man with Zelda as my second. Zero Suit Samus is now my third, and Snake is my fourth.

I have yet to open my manual, but want to so that I can see the pretty pictures... :D

Manuals are for the weak. Unless they're Apple product manuals. Then I memorize them.

Oh, yes. The code. Um... 433x-xxxx-7870. I don't remember the middle. Sorry. I'll fix it when I get home tonight. Of course, I'm going to a Brawl party tonight, so I may not see any of you on for a while...

I've never played any SSB game before... so that's where my lack of any skill extends from... not that I was ever great at fighting games...

I did open the book this morning while waiting for my wife to get ready so I could leave for work and things make a lot more sense now. I probably won't get a lot of game time in this weekend and I'm split on this and finishing up the last 29 stars to get to 242 on SMG. At least I finally finished Metroid about a week or two ago.

I ate Ed H alive yesterday. I'll have to put those up on YouTube. :D

There was maybe a 0.5 second delay though. I'd press buttons and the results would happen a half second later.

My Wii was 5 feet from the router at the time. It's normally about 30 feet from the router and Mario Strikers Charged has zero lag at all.

Oh well, at least my son likes it.

You need to play against more people. Brawl's main fun point is the competition. Alone it is only a distraction.

Learn the control scheme and beat Classic mode with a few characters and maybe play through Subspace Emissary, and then get adult friends over and UTTERLY CRUSH THEM.

Like I did to Ed. :)

So guys, has the lag issues improved? Last time I played I was 5 feet from the router and still had a half second of lag. I think that was Friday, against Ed.

Well I'll probably be entering the codes from this thread later this week. I've finally gotten to play with a good friend last night and it was fun, although we both suck... at least we were relatively evenly matched.

Once I get some more practice in (esp once I finally finish the last 18 stars of SMG) and see if I can't let any of you pummel me to a bloody pulp.

It was almost completely lag free for us last night (at least on my end) and was a pretty good time.

Does anyone know if playing with friends requires all the friend codes to be shared among all participants? If I start an online brawl and I have two friends on my roster can they both join and play in a three-way without being in each other's rosters?

Nope! In fact friends of friends you can invite to your friends list from the character selection screen.

two quick heads up from me to you guys.

first, my name on ssbb online changes sometimes as i'm sharing a wii with someone else, and i'm not always on. i'll come up with a name that i'm always under sometime this weekend, and i'll have zero suit samus if i'm online (if something else is there, then it's not me).

second, i'll start deleting friends that have yet to register starting monday night so i don't clog up the friend codes on my wii.

and another thing, has anyone experienced slowdown the past day or so on the play with anyone channel, since i've experienced random lag and dropoffs to the point of annoyance since last night.

thanks for listening.

A couple people I've been trying to brawl with have an eternal "Brawling Waiting (2/4)" status.

I'll try to join. The first try it seemingly takes forever, then it says their status has changed and I cannot join. I then try again and it goes right in but nobody is in the "room". I'll select my fighter then a stage and I'll play around for about a couple minutes then I get some weird error.

Most of my friends I have zero problems with. Any ideas?

Depends on the person. I had some lag on that ZSS match, but for the most part I have almost no actual "lag". No choppiness, everything looks smooth.

However, there's always a half-second of latency. All my attacks go into effect a half second after I hit the button. Seems tiny but it makes timing and countering so very much harder in online matches against pros. You have to think two moves ahead when fighting faster characters.

i think the only flaw in the online system was lack of notifications if friends are online during certain times when you're in a match or something, and it's a bit annoying, but workable if you arrange a time beforehand when you will fight.

i'm thinking of making a public ssbb calendar on ical so we can easily arrange when we're going to have matches to workaround this flaw.

I'm sorry but the online play is useless. It's a nice novelty but for practicing skills? The latency just makes it worthless. Even if there is no lag at all, the fact that all of your button presses are delayed before the action takes place, which destroys any sense of timing and quick reflexes. It's still somewhat fun in a 1v1 but since you cannot choose to do this unless you go against a friend, the random matches just end up four people showing up and you constantly getting blown up because your button presses don't go into effect until too late.

This may not even be noticeable to button-mashers and casual players, but a skilled player constantly being blown up because of an item that he tried to dodge roll from but the button press wasn't hit early enough gets very, very frustrated.

I was going to get a wii for brawl and Mario Kart, until I read about the stupid friend code. 360 spoiled me I guess.

You seriously wouldn't get the game because of the online play? This is a game for getting friends together in front of a TV for. It's a blast. Forget the online play, pretend it's not even there, and get your friends over for some Mario Kart and Brawl.

I gave the online a try this evening and when I was finally able to get a game going (took four attempts) it was just fine. I've been reading about all the lag issues so I didn't expect much, but it was great. Everything was very responsive and I actually won, which was even more surprising!

Go into a match and test the latency. Press the jump button and see whether your character reacts instantly or a split-second later.

That split second I have completely screws with all of my timings.

Yeah, but you kept slipping out of my combos :) Several times when in a normal environment I could have landed four or five hits on you I only got one or two due to the latency.

For example: Peach's down-kick pins the opponent in place for the duration and the last kick sends the opponent upwards. Several times I started air kicking you while trying to hover directly over you, and the first kicks would hit but I kept moving forward and the last one missed. If the last kick had hit you would have bounced above me at which point I would have up-kicked and then umbrella'd you.

The nasty thing about Peach's down-kick is that generally if the first hit catches you you get stuck in all of them, unless Peach moves far enough that you're no longer stuck in the hitbox. The latency meant I kept moving after the combo started :(

So last night the latency wasn't an issue at all, but I also couldn't manage to get many matches going because no one would join.

Earlier tonight I didn't have a problem with people joining, but the lag was horrible! I played New Pork City (large stage) and it was absolutely awful.

Oh well, I'm not really an online player anyway. Too many kids (and some adults) that just sit there and play for hours on end, so it doesn't end up being very fun. I'm too competitive to get my butt handed to me time and time again. ;)

J/K of course. Actually, with four people going and all items on on completely random stages, it's often not the best player who wins, but he who gets lucky and snags a Smash Ball. If I play five rounds with the same five people the results often vary wildly.

If someone who is good at configuring Airport Extremes would look at this, and run us through the steps, we could probably start playing online SSB without bad lag. The steps listed on this page are supposed to change some port and NAT settings for the wii, which makes the online play much better.

I am normally good for figuring things out, but for whatever reason I couldn't figure out how to configure my Airport Extreme (gigabit 802.11n version with latest firmware) for SSB.

I've registered everyone in the first post.

Does it require both parties to be online simultaneously in order for the registration to actually link for the first time?

I've only had one person (C Dub?) actually get past "awaiting registration."

I'm only on between 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. most nights US Central time. Mind you I don't spend all that time in the WiFi connection, since I'm working through the SSE game, but I usually try to play a few online matches to allow time to link up if anyone else is on.

Mar 27, 2008, 11:52 AM
It would be cool if there was some kind of notice that popped up when a friend comes online. Like if you're in the middle of a random match or SSE or one of the other various areas of the game.... That way, you could finish your game and join the friend in a match. Or maybe even have the possibility to send an online friend a brief message like "I'm on, join me for a match." The message notice even could appear on the friend's in-game screen (like a little icon of an envelope in the top right part of the screen).

That would be cool and very helpful. I can't tell you how many times I've been online and seen you guys online but there were no matches/rooms...or if I started one, nobody ever joined. I wonder if something like this would be even possible with current generation systems...or if simply a software update would allow this. Hopefully, this will at least be a feature of the next generation of consoles. Heh, heh. I should patent this idea. :D

I'm not positive, but it seems that the link only completes when both sides use the Wifi connection concurrently. I've only got 3 of them linked, two were friends that I had arranged to meet, the third was a random someone from this thread. Since I've seen others admit they've entered all of the codes the fact that only one of them has completed tells me that concurrent connection might be a requirement.

I guess that's not a bad thing, it will allow me to see who I even have a shot at running into online here. If the link hasn't completed in a month or so then it's unlikely that we'll ever meet since my time is restricted to the times when everyone else in the house is asleep.

If that's true then there should be at least 2 or three others who are no longer awaiting registration since I know more people have indicated that they entered all of the codes in the first post. I think the very first link up has to somehow be concurrent in order to pass the awaiting registration phase. Not that that is a bad feature, like I said, if I don't run into the registered number within a month or so, there's no reason to keep it since I'll probably never find a common time with that person.

My loading noises are no louder than any other game I've heard them from.

That being said, my IM details are on this forum, and I've usually got the PowerBook on the coffee table while playing so anyone on who wants to see if I'm up for a game, feel free to IM me and I can exit the SSE game at my earliest convenience.

Edit: We can answer the question once and for all. I entered your code on Friday or Saturday night. Do you know when you entered mine? I've played every night except Sunday and you first showed up last night while you (or your brother) were online. If my code was entered at any other time than last night it would indicate a requirement of a concurrent connection.

OK I have modded my wii with wii key so that I may play Wii import titles... but forced software updates can leave it vunerable and some games just dont work.

So I bought FREELOADER to help... which got Battalion Wars working but Smash Bros just doesn't want to know.

I regret not just buying a USA machine from the outset.

If Nintendo had gone to HD, then these problems probably wouldnt be so bad, the 360 has 80% region free issues, and the ps3 is utterly region free.

But Nintendo love to just stick two fingers up to Europe as well as take a stinky leak all over my legitimate wii purchases.

I'm tempted to just download a hacked SSB so I can at least play the game rather than waiting another 2 month for the euro version....

Well, what I get from this is that you got the game from America.

It wont work. The Wii is region protected, so you cant play games from America on a European wii, or the other way around. Im sorry that you wasted $50, youll just have to wait for it to come out in Europe. D:

He got the game from America, but he's got a Freeloader that lets him play American games on a European Wii.

Thing is that he's got one of the dirty lens Wii's that won't play Smash Bros. Nintendo always fixes this for free- except that since Smash bros isn't out in Europe yet, they haven't started the program to fix them yet.

I've only played online once and experienced some lag. If it still lags maybe it's because I'm far from you guys :p (south america)

Most epic thing ever happened today.
I was Ganondorf and my brother was Ike. I did a down-A lightning kick and at the exact same time my brother did Ike's B attack.

He still got hurt but had absolutely no knockback (he was well over 100 damage at the time).

Totally canceled each other out. :D

I am SO tired of stupid people online!

So I enjoy watching brawls online, but I would say about 50% of the time the brawls I watch are just of these morons that just sit there and either taunt or do one more over and over and over and over and over again! I don't care that I lose coins, but I don't want to waste my time watching these complete idiots sit there and do absolutely NOTHING!:mad::mad::mad:

As a general rule of thumb, I'll be mostly available on weekends. I share this Wii with my brother (who will likely decline anyone he doesn't know:rolleyes:), so be sure to set up a time beforehand so I can commandeer the system:D.

So I just played a few matches with fellow Brits. The lag wasn't too bad at first but as someone else joined it became noticable, especially on that F-Zero level. It was really playable when I was playing somebody about 30 miles north of me.

Also it was full of fun. Even lagging. I don't know if it's an updated UK version but there wasn't any delay between button pressing, it just went slow.

GFLPraxis
Jun 29, 2008, 12:36 PM
Yeah, it's almost lagless when I play people in the same state as me. It's even pretty good when i play people two states down (California).

Things get really bad when I play against people in New York and Florida (other side of the state) but it never gets choppy, only delayed. I learned to compensate.

I'm curious to see against someone in the UK :D

Same here. I've got praxis, jimmi, legato, and bobber entered in so far. Praxis, I'm curious to see how your Peach fares against my Ike, at least in lagland ;). For anyone who wants to play, feel free to drop a line.

GFLPraxis
Jun 30, 2008, 03:53 AM
Oh crud. Peach gets gimped by lag since I have to be so precise with the float, while Ike is the best character in the game under lag because I can't get out of the way of the smash attacks.

Odds stacked against me...sounds like fun! :D
