OpenDoc and Java

When the OpenDoc project was called quit (or put into limbo) by Steve Jobs he argued it is only because there is OpenDoc replacement in Java to be delivered shortly. Nothing that is comparable to OpenDoc ever come out of Apple. Is there any chance for us to see some of the wonderful ideas of OpenDoc again or was it only one of many of Jobs' lies ?
