When can we expect to see the next iMac update?
Does Apple ever just implement newer chips(penryn) without making it official at one of their events?

for example, the last two times the macbook and macbook pro were updated on the site without any corresponding event.

Yup, it does so all the time. Keynote are mainly for new or majorly redesigned products.

March 18th or 25th if they are going to upgrade to penryrn. if not, the aim might before june. then again, Apple might do something radical and slip desktop processors in there, in which case who knows.

I doubt Apple is going to deviate from their current precedent.

Don't get me started on quad core mobile processors.
