Personally, I don't think it's very elegant. It's missing the subtleties of the Panther theme, nice, soft gradation in the titlebar, etc.

"Whiteout replaces a system resource file with a modified version. The metal texture is changed to the original Aqua pinstripe texture."

Ack. That sounds like a really bad idea. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this will change every single program I have, yes?

Not to mention, aquafied metal apps still have metalesque buttons and it looks a little silly.

No clue who is responsible (suicide girls?) but what a great mod. And releasing it for free. How cool is that. I never liked the brushed theme, but I'm totally cool with those that do. Now we can all be happy! :)

On second though, as much as I don't want to, I think these girls on the main site are hot hot hot.

I think it's interesting that suicide girls is hosting this. Was it designed by them/one?

He should be, I found this in his thread.

It works on 10.2 also, gives the apps a Panther Aqua look but I don't recommend it since there are a few differences between the RSRC files. Safari and iCal are also Aquafied.

And I would also like to echo that the girls on there are very hot. *giggle*

Screenie on 10.2:

Thats a nice mod there.

Weird that Sucidegirls are hosting it...

Ah well...

BTW, I don't think you get to see any nudity till atleast 1 click into the site... (from the homepage)

yes!! :D

i'm definitely going to be trying this out. although i don't really mind the metal finder, it's just that it looks big and clunky. whiteout at least fixes the look. even though the size of the Finder windows doesn't change, having a lighter colour definitely makes the windows look smaller, and not as big and clunky.

i only wish that you could just de-metalfize the Finder by itself. but i guess someone will work that out... :D

edit> i just installed it. kinda weird seeing the SG logo on an installer like that... :D

I am not too crazy about BM either, but I don't think I would go to the extent of removing it from the system.

I like Brushed Metal, but Whiteout is better, I have a Snow iMac DV SE and it goes real well!

It changes Safari, Finder, and most other Metal Apps except iTunes. Combine with ShadowKiller on www.unsanity.com for cool effect.

(and why Suicide Girls? Maybe they are Switchers ;)

i was a little peeved when i opened the screenshot for safari to find half-naked ladies...not on a personal level, but i'm sitting here at work and that was an unpleasant surprise considering my co-workers are all around me...i hate when that happens...i had to scramble to close the window fast enough.

what do coked-up college girls have to do with an os mod?

...they coded it? Published it? It's hard to generalize suicidegirls.com as just "coked-up college girls."
Besides, if you read this thread full of "hot, hOT, HOT!" posts, what did you expect?

I think I'll stick with Metallifizer, at least that way I can decide what apps keep the brushed metal look.

I'm not crazy about the bm, but I do like it on iChat. Seeing no bm on iChat was weird.

I love the brushed-metal finder anyway. Makes it feel more like an application, then a utillity.

ps. Does Metalifizer work in Panther now?

a) Mention of Ladies
b) Pictures Half Naked Ladies
c) No mention of Sucide-Girls at all execpt the website http.

Also we posted like 16 times about the site...

Frankly, I thought the site was a nice diversion.

It's amazing how quickly command W works when one's world is slightly rocked. May the more sensitive among us learn its value and practice its use while I'm revisiting the site.

Real girls are hot. Girls I think are real are hotter...

Anyone know if Duality is being patched to handle forcibly unMetallizing the Finder and other apps?

If not, wonder how messy it would be to hack this hack so that the Aqua resources it intends on swapping in are themselves replaced with resources that match the theme you're using in Duality?

I might take back my praise for whiteout. I am on my 3rd panther install....2nd where I wipe the drive first.

Anyway, I have reason to believe whiteout caused some of my "panther problems". I uninstalled it, and I'll post back here if my issues continue....then you know it isnt whiteout.

it does seem snappier without whiteout running, and I have to admit I have been installing whiteout almost imediately cause I dont like the metal.....

Of note, I've discovered a Metaliizer beta in the unsanity archives that does the same thing although I believe it looks nicer. The only Carbon app I can de-metalifize is the Finder apparently, I use a combination of Whiteout and this beta to get the appearence I want since neither of them do it by themselves.

You can grab it here (http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000267.php#000267) but be warned, its still in early beta I believe.

it isn't whiteout. it's panther. I hate panther, simply because I am way less productive.

Going back to jaguar on friday. and will not try panther again until after graduation in may most likely. I don't have time for this crap.

nope.

maybe slightly, but it still crashes at least once a day. and I mean, NOTHING responds except for the mouse. there isnt even a spinning ball of death.

final cut is still sucking a fat one, mail keeps messing up...etc etc etc.

it a completely clean HD and totally new prefs (which was a pain in the ass)

I cant have somethign happen when im in the middle of shooting....so until my film is done I can only try out panther on my other drive just to see, but I gotta stick with Jag as my main OS.

Ouch, that sucks.

Luckily, Panther and FCP/Soundtrack/LiveType have been great on my MDD and PB. Hope things get better for you soon.

But they help me be a lot more productive then without. and they work WONDERFULLY with jaguar. So I'm gonna stick with jaguar for another half year or so.
