Time Machine hard drive running out of space!

Is there any way to transfer the backups from my 500 gig drive to another 1 TB drive or a 1 TB time capsule?

Clone it.
The back up done by Time Machine will start erasing the oldest records with the newest ones.

how do you clone it?

You can use Disk Utility to create an image of the whole HDD, or use either Carbon Copy or SuperDuper to replicate the HDD.
