Stuck on Spinning Gear

Hi, well I'm not sure why it's doing this but my pretty fresh install of Tiger sans updates is stuck on the spinning gear screen. I tried safe mode but it still hangs on that spinning gear with the apple logo on top. This is on a MBP.
