I cannot get Windows Update to work in boot camp (or VMware Fusion) - it just crashes/hangs all the time. I have searched the net without luck and the MS knowledge base and the forums.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

You can try the following - solves general Windows update not working issues

- Stop the Windows update service (it could be called automatic updates I don't have a XP machine here a the moment to check)
- search for a file called datastore.edb
- delete it (you can take a copy first if you want)
- start the service you stopped earlier
- try another Windows update.

Failing that on the Windows update home page there is an option to use Microsoft update instead. Give that a try.

I am having this issue as well. I have rebooted and this issue still occurs.

Any other ideas?

Edit - I am trying the Microsoft update as steveza recommends.

Is windows update coming up with any of the cryptic number errors when it crashes or is it just a full nothing you can do crash?

When I select the 91 updates that I need, then click the install updates button, the download screen pops up and just hangs...almost like I do not have internet, but I do.

Dont go for all 91 straight out of the gate.

Go into internet explorer, then click tools, go to windows update, do the necessary installation of the update tools and then when it asks you if you want to do an express or custom update choose custom.

Uncheck all the updates and then try and install a few at a time.

I'm going to try that right now.....I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks.

You could just try a reinstall then as it sounds like you have only just started with that one. Sorry cant help anymore out of options!!!

I finally got it all to update.

I installed IE 7. I tried again and it worked. Automatic updates did it's thing as well.

Thanks for your help Santa Rosa.

I know this is an old post but I'm experiencing the same problem - it's like windows update doesn't have internet. I am running vista ultimate, and it struggles to update anything (I've done the driver updates from the leopard cd). How did you manage to fix this?

Try setting up automatic updates and see if it does anything.

Are you using IE 7?

I am using IE 7, and I can successfully check for updates (I have 53 to go) but I can't download them or install them. I know that when I shut off the computer it installed 3, but I don't know why it chose only 3 to install during shut down. I did manage to install the "windows update" update, but I'm having no success after that. I really wish games were cheap and available for mac so I didn't have to deal with this god awful OS.

Try this doc http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 then restart. It worked for me.
