Time Machine doesn't work automatically, manually its fine tough

Topic kind of says it all .. my time machine works fine when I click "Backup Now", but in Preferences it always shows the next backup date/time as "When the mac is connected".

So ... it isn't taking the hourly backups its supposed to.

What can I do ? Tried switching it on and off and re-chosing my external HD as backup device, but no good.
