Help with making ringtones

I just got my iphone a couple days ago, and so I'm up at 2:30 in the morning trying to make ringtones to use for it. I can take copies of my music in itunes and change the extensions to .m4r files but a 3:30 minute ringtone doesn't do me much good....I tried to use the program Audacity to edit my music, but it won't work for some reason. Audacity has you convert the files to WAV then edit them but after I edit them and change the extension, itunes won't open it. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there another program that I could use that I could use to just edit the m4a files instead. Thanks for the help in advance!!

after you edit the song in audacity, you then have to export as mp3.

go to nakko.com i just found out about it, you can make them there and just put them in your itunes afterwards i think im creating some right now i ll let you know how it goes..

i just made three ringtones and just dragged them into the ringtone tab in itunes, synced and done,, super easy works like a charm..

I think that it is extremely easy to do this in quicktime so you don't have to download a new program or buy ringtones. The only set back is that it will only work if you have quicktime pro. All you have to do is:

1) Open the audio file in quicktime
2) Find the section of the song that you want
3) Move the little bars around the section that you want (all mine are 30 sec)
4) Edit > Trim to selection
5) File > Export (export the file as an aiff)
6) Open it in itunes and convert it to whatever format you need from there

It's really easy and cheap!! :)

The Steps to Creating a Ringtone:

1) Find the audio you want to use for the ringtone. (if it the length you want it, goto 7)
2) Open it in either QuickTime Pro or Audacity.
3) Select the piece you want, Trim.
4) Export (in QuickTime, from Audio to wave, in Audacity, make sure it is aiff or wav)
5) Open in iTunes and convert to either m4a or mp3.
6) Drag the new file to the desktop from the iTunes window
7) Download and open iToner from http://www.ambrosiasw.com
8) Drag the desired ringtones to the window
9) Hit Sync.
10) Enjoy.

Note: iToner is Shareware, but it has been stated before that if you are using it from time to time or after firmware updates, they have no problem with you using it, but if you are addind and removing ringtones often it would be nice to support them.

on my garageband you can just make it there and make it as a ringtone.
