Short men are the most likely to be jealous, scientists believe.BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7291366.stm).

Spanish and Dutch research at it's finest :D

What sort of heights count as 'short'?

Anything other than within 3" of the average for where you live would class as short IMO. I think the average for the UK is supposed to be 5'10", so I have nothing to worry about with my 6'0" athletic and aesthetically pleasing frame :)

I'm average height but I do get a touch jealous sometimes. I wonder if it gets worse when I wear flat soled shoes...

Still, I make up for not being tall in other areas :D

I'm 5'7" and I feel I'm pretty much average for the place I live in (India). Since the average for the UK is 5'10" (where do you people get these statistics, btw) I should be ok over there too.

There are regular studies carried out by governments as knowing not only the average but also the distribution in a nation's height is really important when desiging and planning developments of infrastructure from an ergonomics perspective. Although I hate to reference Wikipedia, they do have a nice table showing the current variance between nationalities here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height), which you'll be glad to see actually puts you as rather tall by Indian standards :)

I lose. I'm only 5'6" (a good four inches below average for my age/ethnicity). I actually stand as tall or nearly as tall as some of my taller friends, though. Being a choir director, I trained myself to stand as tall as I could while conducting, and it led to standing tall in my real life. I have a friend who walks with such awful posture that he's nearly my height most of the time, but when he stands up he's a good six inches taller than I am. I was visiting the family of a romantic interest of mine once and her sister made us stand back to back in order to ensure that I was indeed taller than her. I was, by perhaps half an inch. :D

I am 6' 4" tall. ( In the top 5% of for Males in the US)

Now something that people always take forgattend is being as tall as me has problems. They do not design things for people of my height. I can no get a car with a sun roof because then my head rubs the roof. I am to big for a lot of sports cars. HELL most cars do not have enough room in the drivers seat for some one of my height.

What about the plight of the tall man. We have a lot of struggles to. The world is more designed for some one over 6 inches shorter than average than 6 inches taller.

I'm average height. I wish I was still short, though. Growing up I was the shortest boy in my class all the way to the eight grade. I shot up 10 inches between my second and fourth year of High School.

The only thing about my body that actively bugs me (aside from my general fitness, I can actually control that :p) is that I'm just shy of 6'. I just need another half inch or so. :mad:Welcome to the club. I have the exact same problem.

Or I should say, I had the exact same problem. I was 5' 11.5" when I was a young man, but I'm 51 now, and frankly, I'm afraid to get my height measured for fear of what I might find.

But I can so understand why short guys would be more jealous. It's bad enough you'd have to listen to the occasional ribbing, even in good sport and from friends, and pretend that it's not annoying. But if I were a half-foot shorter, I'd feel even more insecure than I do now. :p

Of course, some short people find ways to make up for it -- Napoleon, Hitler....

(Hey, I finally found a legitimate way to mention Hitler in a thread! :D )

Of course, some short people find ways to make up for it -- Napoleon, Hitler....I read somewhere a while back that Napoleon wasn't actually that short. His rumoured lack of height stemmed from the fact that, at the time, French inches were a bit bigger than British ones (the standard 'Imperial' inch all us non-metric types use today). It naturally didn't take long for us British to start lampooning him for what we perceived to be his lack of inches, and so this reputation stuck. Taking the two systems into account and converting the measurements accordingly, Napoleon was apparently a little over the average height for a Frenchman of the period.

That Hitler was a proper shortarse, though. :p

i'm 5' 2" in height, but in my mind i'm the tallest guy in the world. I used to be fat for my size, but i'm down 20 lbs to a very healthy 140 lbs :)

honestly, i don't think i'm jealous. Do i wish I was a few inches taller? sometimes. But when I'm hunting, I can get under tree branches and literally follow the exact same path that deer follow, allowing me to track them well. My hunting buddies are jealous of that :) The only that does tick me off is clothes or shoe shopping - i'm half way b/n buying adult and kids sizes. ie. my feet are size 6.5 :) my waist is small (29), but i always need the length cut. I could wear kids jeans b/c the length is great, but the waist is too small. :)

I've never seen short guys as being jealous so it's interesting to see that article. if anything, being vertically challenged as made me want to excel that much more.

and, as Yoda says:

"size matters not"

it's all in your mind :)

5' 8", so I'm a little under US standards. Though pretty tall for my country of origin apparently. Actually, I've gotten over not being 5'10" or more, I don't know, I think once I passed year 21? And I know of shorter people who does not seem to be bothered by their height, either. Maybe the supposed "jealousy" and chips on the shoulder carried by shorter people is just a way for taller people to feel a little more superior?... Most people do mature and end up accepting who they are, you know?

And for those other shorties that do have jealousies, remember to always go fro the knees first. 6'4" quickly goes down to 5'2", then you can elbow or knee to the face to your heart' content. :D

I'm 6'3", so I guess I'm perfectly happy! :) Nah- nothing is made for tall people- not planes, cars, trains, buses, or any public transportation. The only things that tall people get are shelves in the kitchen. We can always reach the top shelf. Height is intimidating as well, I suppose.

That said- I LOVE short guys. I always have- they're cute, lovable and tend to have lots of energy. Also- nature compensates for lack of height in other ways, if you get my meaning. ;)

Well, part of the reason for that is managing arthritis. I have it in both my knees and it looks like my left ankle is next- it's been acting up too. My left knee went out when I was 35. It was so bad that I couldn't walk for 2 days. I went and had an MRI done and there it was- nasty arthritis. So, while I've always been an athletic guy, it's even more important now for me to stay in shape. If I don't, the deterioration will accelerate. I'm hoping not to have the knee replacements before 55 as they only last about ten years before you need new ones. Sorry to ruin your image. :) It freaked me out at first, but I haven't had any major problems since that first time. We all have our crap to deal with and that's mine. It's actually been going rather well and I don't usually have too much pain most of the time.

Yes, we should be jealous. The inequality in height distribution in this country is an outrage. My advice would be to use incentives and perhaps a stimulus package to help those of us who are vertically challenged individuals and just haven't has the same growth opportunities. As far as I'm concerned, if one of us is short, we are all short.

As a sociologist, I think this is just more BS. In the first place, studies never speak for all individuals in a category. They look at a group of tall men and a group of short men, and may find more jealousy in the short group. But there will be many in the short group that are not jealous, and many in the tall group that are. I have certainly known wonderful short people and tall folks who were jacka**s.

Although I do think that when society values one body type over another resentments are bound to occur. Too bad we can't understand that the more diverse a species is, the better its chance of survival. ALL body types served a purpose in getting us here!

LeeKohler - Have you ever tried glocosamine and chondroitin? My knees on my ample body are just fine despite all the warnings from the health casandras.
