View Full Version : Recommend a movie my mother would like!
Hello.there
Mar 14, 2008, 01:36 PM
She's a very hard woman to please! I've rented her 79,372 movies (roughly :o) and she's probably loved five or six of them -
eg
On Golden Pond
Chocolat
Amelie
Babette's Feast
My Life as a Dog
She hates anything too 'drippy', but loves 'sweet' movies with a good story, maybe with a touch of romance. Violence and heart-breaking ends (eg Pay it Forward) are a complete no-no.
Help? :)

Hard to say without knowing your mother, but...
Never met anyone that didn't thoroughly enjoy:

Kind of a "feel-good" movie, but touching nonetheless:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ANGVNEBVL._SS500_.jpg
The story is a little rough on the squeamish (a little violence and some sensitive topics), but my mother loved:

I was going to suggest that one too, but it's very sad at the end, thus breaking the OP's 'no heart-breaking endings' rule.
I thought 'Music and Lyrics' was a good movie.

Any movie with Marion Cotillard in it would be watchable. She is that good.
How about a movie that has romance, comedy, violence and a moral lesson?

Hugh Grant is a drippy actor, but in About a Boy, he's actually very good. I think as the character is so similar to what he's like in real life, the emotional struggle of the character has some impact on him, and makes him more reflective that his usual crappy boy-man cad pretending-to-act schick.
I think your mother would also love Delicatessen.
I've noticed there's a lot of French / classic Euro / New Wave cinema in that list. If your ma doesn't mind subtitles, there's some of the best movies in the world in that direction. A real education in filmmaking as craft and a labour of love.

Couldn't agree more. I was almost embarrassed when I approached the cashier with a "Hugh Grant" flick in my hand.
After watching it, I was almost hesitant to return it without at least one more viewing. Like him or not, the movie was well done and couldn't have had a better cast.
I'd also like to add "Grosse Pointe Blank" to the list. Some violence, but an extremely well acted dark comedy. Minnie Driver and John Cusack had a chemistry you just don't see often.

By iffy, I mean it is funny, but is a little crude and therefore may not be approprate for a prudish viewer.

Anything by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samauri, Yojimbo, Ran, etc) , or Hayao Miyazaki (Monoke, Spirited Away etc) or Pixar / Dreamworks? (Shrek, The Incrediables, etc etc)
That's some of the best filmmaking in the world there. Hayao Miyazaki in particular is very good at making films where the 'baddies' are more complex than at first sight.

The actors are unknown and it was filmed in two weeks. The ending is sort of happy but it's an excellent film nonetheless.

This movie has a mostly happy ending but the movie is gut wrenching. I highly recommend it. It actually takes place in your part of the globe, well, sort of.

I recommend the Japanese file Shall We Dance (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117615/). An elderly relative showed this to me, and I thought I would have to sit through it just to be polite. By the time it was over, I could see why she put it on without question; this is a movie that anyone who loves movies will enjoy.

two of the best films EVER made, both are wonderful.
although the only film i ever made my mum sit and watch was Shawshank, and she loved it! so i suppose that must also get a vote as well.

Waking Ned Divine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166396/)
Jackie O'Shea, a resident of the tiny Irish coastal village of Tully More, discovers that one of his neighbors has won the lottery - the question is, who? It takes some doing, but Jackie figures out that the lucky person is none other than his new best friend, Ned Devine. Unfortunately, it turns out Ned is in no position to collect the jackpot, which totals almost 6.9 million Irish pounds. So Jackie and his real best friend, Michael O'Sullivan, try to figure out a way to share in Ned's good fortune - after all, Ned would want it that way. But things get a lot more complicated than either Jackie or Michael could have anticipated.
