I know a reasnable amout about networking but still

now: cube+ibook+ibook g4+adsl router (4 port) file shareing works all osx.3

ideal: can login as anyone anywhere

can possibly get a G3 pm (b&w) to act as server but we are on a budget any ideas how to set it up? would we have to run osx server on the server or culd we run some os 9 server thing.
what would work the best and what could be acheved cheepest?

You need Mac OS X (10.2) Server or better, it has NetBoot which lets a Mac boot from the drive that is on the Mac acting as the server. (correct me if I'm wrong) All the user's files and programs would be on the server and it should be fine. You would have to buy it though and it isn't cheap. It is probably complicated too...

Also I wouldn't connect the iBooks to the server, think of this, when your iBook is away from the server...where will it get it's files? How will it boot? Basicly if you wanted your Macs to rely on the Mac with Mac OS X Server, I would leave the protable macs out of this.

just my advice :)
