Help!!! my mac is getting slower and clash more frequently

I am desperately need help here... I don't know what happen to my macbook. It's getting slower and slower. Safari and Firefox are loading very slow and sometime clashed. Application like Microsoft Word clashed more frequently in the middle of my writing of my paper and that is very annoying. I don't know what the cause of the problem. What should I do?

Have you installed anything new recently? Any new hardware? How about have you ran any maintenance on your machine. Like disk utility.
