So I was going to get a TC, but after reading all of the posts about how slow it is, I'm considering just connecting a big eSata drive to my Linux server and sharing it out via AFP.

I know this is technically 'not supported' by time machine, but there are ways to make it work. Are any of you doing this? Has it been reliable? Have you tried to restore data with success?

I guess if the overwhelming results of people who have done this are negative, I'll get a TC just for the time machine backups, and then roll the eSata solution for storage on my network. It is a shame that the TC can't achieve the 400+ mbps I can get while writing to drives on my gig network 🙁
