View Full Version : iPhone Game - KingdomGame.net - Looking for testers...

Hello hello,

Over the past couple of weeks I've been using my (somewhat limited) free time to make a little mobile based game (works on a wide range of mobile devices, as well as the net) - I say mobile based game, but really "small screen compliant" would be more accurate...

... annnnnyyywaaay. The game is a browser based that creates a kingdom when a person register's and places them in a world with all the other people playing the game... you can then build on your land, spy on people, go to war, join and create alliances, send out diplomats, train warriors, etc etc.

What I'm looking for is more testers to help out with stress testing the game - so if any of you have a moment or two and would be willing to spare some time, the game is available at:

The brown text is quite hard to read on the brown background. But im signed up and will have a go, i used to play planetarion but not for a few years now, iphone would rock for that now, but i need my sleep more these days!

I am not knocking the game. I guess my attention span isn't that great.

First up, cheers to everyone who has already signed up!

It's a sort of slow, play when you get a minute type game... so you start something off one day, then come back and do a bit more the next day... of course, it speeds up a wee bit more after the first couple of days.

My biggest tip is *explore a lot* early on, it helps you expand later!

Cheers again, I think I might turn up the brightness on the text, I've got my brightness set to about 75% on my phone.. what's yours set to (just wondering.. so I can test changes on your setting).

I am not knocking the game. I guess my attention span isn't that great.

You dont have to sit and watch it, thats the idea!! if it takes 8 hours, just get some kip or something, just checking in every few hours to keep an eye on invaders etc.

its at 50% autobrightness on, i think a slight bit more golden on the text and we'll have a winner, i do have some other grumbles tho, before i get totally addicted to this, the menu at the top seems to be a very low res, menu,overview,etc, and the only other thing thats bugging me, but i dont think you can help, is having to use the iphone keyboard, flicking it to numberpad all the time to enter details is getting me a little.

And I really don't know what the iPhone does.. on mine, when on wireless, the image comes up crystal clear (the same as when it's on the net).. however, when on dialup, it seems to compress it somehow...? Any ideas anyone?

The keyboard, sadly, I can't fix :/

The hub of your army. From here you can attack other kingdoms, and take land and money from their oppressive regime. Attacking is a risky but necessary strategy. You may not be entirely sure of the strength of your opponent, and whilst your troops are out on campaign they will be enable to defend your own kingdom

Is this right? I'd have thought they wouldn't be able to defend whist out on campaign

Updates are done every minute... so "near" real-time.

Lastly - I've done a few of the changes suggested above - including lightening the font colouring...

font colour is alot better!! In keeping with the time period the theme portrays, before it was quite hard to see when outside, but its fine now.

the address hiding is mostly working, not sure what the problem is as pages that it didn't hide the first try do the second, which is odd, although pages where the bigger lists just went off the bottom sit on the screen alot better.

If you can sort the top menu graphics issue, its a winner!!

im kinda assuming there will be game resets every so often as everyone will end up getting huge and theres no chance for any new players to get into the game without just getting eaten alive, is there a 72hr protection period when starting out?. tbh i havent gone through all the posts in the forum

There will be a big reset this weekend (as I will have implemented the markets by then.. and fixed up a lot of the [-beep-] bugs) - therefore, it'll be moving from alpha 2.9.i to beta 1 :)

There is a two day protection for new players, so you'll be fine for a bit... then it starts to get messy.

I have only been registered for about 5 minutes, but one thing that I noticed right away is that it is a bit annoying to enter numbers into the "How Many to Build" fields. I am playing from my iPhone, and when I build a new building, I have to click in the text field so the keyboard will pop up. Then I need to switch to the numerical keyboard, and then enter a number, then click Done or Go. Too many steps for such a simple action, if you ask me.

At the very least, maybe a deault value of 1 in the text box, since there is a confirm page anyway. A little better would be a pop-up menu, so I can simply swipe my finger to select. But best would be a simple [+] and [-] button, maybe on either side of the input box, which will simple add or subtract 1 from the value currently in the input. Then I can just tap the [+] and then build without invoking the keyboard.

Just my $0.02 after 5 minutes...

Registered yesterday on my iPod Touch and I must say Im impressed and find myself continuing to log in this morning and this evening! Soon as my iPhone arrives I'll be able to play on the move! Not a game a thought id like but want to play more! Times in the game could do with maybe shortening a little but not too much! The interface is great!

This kind of game is very well suited for the touch/iphone

a good bit of stratagy and they prove you dont need gfx to create addictive games!

Soty, the times are very short in comparison to plantarion, in that some things take 72hrs to complete construction!! you just got to have some thought into when you start these things, you dont want them finishing an hour after you've gone to bed wasting a nights worth of construction time.

Im into the top 25 now!!!

Excellent to hear - lots more coming tonight (fixing a myriad of bugs and will be adding in markets to boot)... It may interest you to know that the times *have* been shortened in game (for everything except castles.. which are still monster five day builds...)

You'll both see the message in game.. but for other people who may be interested, there is going to be a server reset this Weekend on Sunday at 2pmGMT (10AM EST) to level the playing field (time to get Gregdom and Creatokst off the top!!) and start the beta testing phase!

Last up.. Markets are going to be added tonight to allow trading between different Kingdoms (and also a very very mean spirited "wandering (computer) trader" that gives rubbish return on trades) along with some other bug fixes :)

It's a 1 in 15 change of adding half the amount of priests you have mana.

So:
NewMana = mana + (Priest/2)


p.s. Markets in, and there are a myriad of other fixes and changes :)

I can't seem to load the Overview or Detailed Overview pages. I have tried on both Firefox for Windows and an iPhone - they go into a constant state of refresh. Just started happening an hour or so ago.

That error should be fixed now.. the update introduced a new error, so I've rolled back the part that was erroring and am trying to fix it "behind the scenes".. sorry about that.

Aye, I thought as it was just another testing phase I'd leave everyone currently signed up, in game.. then rename kingdoms as people wanted :D

Good work on the attack! I wish my attacks worked out well against places 50% bigger than me!

Something.. odd.. is going on - the site is being bombarded with a very large number of hits...

.. are you still getting the errors?

I'm going to (at some point) make the number next to a field be clickable (to put the whole number into the input box) - I used to have the numbers prepopulated, but some people complained about deleting them.. - there's no winning sometimes :P :)

How about leaving it blank, but adding [+] [-] and [Max] buttons. Then you are one click away from the max possible, and to get the min (1) you could just click the [+]. Sounds like a good compromise to all.

Could you have a look at the "Build Buildings" page - I've added in a quick example.. is that what you wanted to see?

something seems to be wrong with attacking, im not getting the report when hitting attack, i get a sql error, but the attack still seems to happen

That is great. Just what I was thinking. I would make them larger, however. They are a bit difficult to touch in the iPhone. It looks like they could be about twice as big (twice as wide and twice as tall) and still be the same height as the input box. Also after Carnivor mentioned it, I think a Max button would be a good option too.

i cant build atm, only soldiers, they dont appear to have the buttons, but i saw + - on buildings earlier, they were GREAT!!!!!

- I'm going to make the touch buttons only available to people using the iPhone and iPod touch - I have a feeling that it will get annoying for those people who have to scroll through each individual link field on their phones....

is it an idea to make the rank details in the overview screen shortcut to the rankings page? rather than have to goto the menu and then to the rankings? maybe point net worth there aswell, and mana to the holy circle

after all you can shortcut to your mailbox from the overview!!


im now quite addicted to this!

edit: maybe remove the population details and jsut have the total. shortcut it to the armed forces page, thatll shorten the page length and fit nicer on iphone

Right - we're back up and cooking with gas - the reset will be happening tomorrow night at 2230GMT (or 1730EST)

The game did indeed pick up from where it left off.. :)

Just a thought, but why did you do the attacks as an immediate attack and a journey time back home?

You could have a 4 hr journey to the attack, and a 4hr journey back, and have other kingdoms that could defend. say the 1st hour, you can raise defense from others in alliance etc, but an hour into the journey if you haven't gotten defense your on your own, or with the defenders you can find in the first hour.

The attacker could also use the spy to check on the attack, if they got defense, recall the attack if necessary.

That's going to come in the attack rewrite soon - shouldn't be too difficult..
.. you'll be able to see who's going to be attacked and when (same timings though, 30 minutes per rank... - so that'll be 15 minutes there 15 minutes back - the timings are subject to change.. might make it an hour per rank (30 mins there and back..)).

That'll also help at some point with reinforcements :D

Has there been (or will there be) any update or clarification of the Overview/Detailed Overview consumption rates? I just can't seem to figure out which hourly rates are correct (they differ between Overview and Detailed Overview), and the GC and Food consumed per hour on the Detailed Overview is way off from what I would expect from looking at the description of each type of Armed Force.

Also, let me know if you want/need any help. I know that you have recently become crazy busy with this project. ;) I don't have any server space to offer you, but I could help with coding, scripting, database... I know you aren't asking, but I thought I would offer nonetheless.

Im having the same problem (in world 5). I switched to world 2 to see if that would fix it... But it doesnt.

Same for me, then it goes away after 1-2 hours after the timer should have been done. Super annoying. :(

I've been playing for the last few days, and WOW! I am totally addicted to this game already... There are bugs for sure, but on my first kingdom I am already in top five!

I have been posting ideas and suggestions in game on the forums... should i continue?

Also I've been having a nagging question. I've already got one castle in production, and since then have found very little use for the massive amount of lumber/stone I am producing.

Is there benefit to building another castle? Additional defense bonuses, or better land/money/population bonus ratio...

This is a great game, but when you get attacked.. no matter what, you lose every single one of your pheasants.. and it takes like 12 hours to regain.. and by that time you get home from work, school, w/e you've already got attacked and have to restart... you should only lose like half or more but not all, it's to hard to start back up

I'm getting a negative spaces in my stables/barracks/range since I woke up this morning. It seems like anything built after a certain point has added into my curently training but isn't being subtracted. I haven't been able to train any new forces since this happened. What should I do?

I got attacked and lost all my peasants. The attack was repelled tho, i know you can lose troops and land as well.

Hello all - sorry for the delay in replying - been very hectic trying to get the new server(s) in place :)

Annyyway, to answer some of the questions..

Castles also give a +10% def bonus EACH.

Peasants - you're going to start losing less on attacks (up to a maximum of 50% of your total)

Login speeds (and general server times) should be fixed.

Going to run, I am available at paulhutson@kingdomgame.net - however, responses *will* be slow.

Hey Paul, just as a suggestion. It might be a good idea to lower the times for building to be constructed. Making it a game so you don't have to constantly pay attention, but can check up every hour and actually have some stuff done.

Glad to hear the peasants will be protected...

Its really difficult to grow them up when everytime I get attacked they all die off. I think its really weird also when I successfully defend my kingdom and they still die! Shouldn't they live, while my troopers die? I mean... peasants suck at fighting, thats why we upgrade them to troopers.

I like the idea of new uses for mana... since we're on the topic of peasants, how about a spell to increase the growth rate of peasants?

The only other suggestion I have is the ability to delete forum posts... sometimes we say things we later regret... :D

As you know the forums are not secured... SOOOO some people have learned to edit the final two numbers in their private alliance forum address to access OTHER alliance's "private" forum posts!

Heck even today there was a kingdom in an enemy alliance posting in OUR alliance forum!

As you can imagine this is a huge problem... :confused:

I've been playing the game for about two weeks now, and I think it's great. I am completely addicted. But one thing I can't figure out is how to increase the amount of gold coins I get per hour. My rate has slowly decreased as I have added more soldiers, and once it got below 10GC per hour I tried to change my tax rate. I tried both upping it and lowering it, but both of these dropped me to -1500 an hour. And then it got even lower when I returned it to the default 10%! It slowly climbed back up to just around no profit, so now I am limited to only making money by selling on the market. Is this my only option?

yep thats a bug. it doesn't correctly calculate the amount of taxes you get right away. change it to 20% and wait about five minutes and it will change.

to the op: this sound exactly like utopia that i have been playing for years no on swirve.com - works with any web-based device: internet but really if you haven't windows a nice utility that helps you make attacks makes the experience hit and miss.

i will sign up to check it out but sounds like a clone of one of the greatest online games ever

I remember reading in the Kingdomgame forums that they are actually heroes from battles.

So you can't actually train any, but you may get one as a result of going to war.

Have I just read my report wrong and in fact won the battle while managing to have all my soldiers killed?!

If not, is this a bug?

Sorry, I wasn't being clear enough in my post.

They are not coming back –*they have been wiped from my total number of troops as if they never existed. They are not listed as coming back in the war room.

This was, unfortunately one of the outstanding bugs and has been fixed now.. sorry I didn't get to it sooner - needless to say, you can blame it on my coding muppetry.

Not very soon, no, but I will work on it when I get the other bugs kicked in to touch.

My current work list is:
1) Transfer Domain to new faster host, to stop timeout problems!!
2) Continue fixing bugs.
3) Implement "nasty prayers" on live servers.
4) Implement Docks/Navies/Ship Yards.
5) Implement Cross world (or rather, continent) raiding (as in using the ships to transport troops to attack other continents.
6) Add in more functionality to the system.

Another oddity for you here, nothing you can really do about it tho,

i was on the overview, i noticed the amount of lumber was underlined, i thought you'd made a new hyperlink, so i clicked it, and nearlly dialled the amount of lumber i have, LOL,

as i say not alot you can do to stop this, thought it was funny tho

I signed up for an account and never got the e-mail confirming my registration and I can't login at all!

Anyhow, it is too easy to accidentally buy something at the market using an iphone.I've done it twice now just scrolling through the list. Maybe there should be a confirmation page like with everything else.

It does take a bit more balancing now, I agree, but I think it makes the game a bit fairer.

You might also want to try different types of troops, rather than all one type (not saying you were, because I've not had a look) - it brings the other troops into line a bit more, so everyone doesn't just stack archers and knights!

aah..! I have no money and if I set my tax above 20%, my troops leave. so basically now either I have to send the troops out and actually hope that they die or I could set my tax higher and my preists and spies will leave.
please do away with this Paul! I'm not guna stop until it's gone (and I am very annoying, obviously.)

Frankly, I have never used that 100% tax glitch. The increased GC flow might increase your networth really fast but it is not a real measure of how strong your kingdom really is. You might get a real high NW but you would still get raped by smaller marauding kingdoms if NW is not backed up by soldiers. Networth gained from armed forces I think is a more real representation of you true networth. And there is no such thing as 100% tax in the old days or today. Nobody works for free.:D

As has been said, the taxes thing is important, if you were taxed "through the nose" for doing your work, would you continue to work? Wouldn't you go somewhere else where the wages are better (i.e. you made more money from your work)?

Soldiers don't like to be messed around, it's better than me adding in "civil war" and having your own soldiers turn rebellious.. ;)

why do preists get paid? and why would preists get mad if you don't pay them? doesn't seem very godlike to me!

also, there I think you should put the ability to moderate and edit posts on the alliance forums under a privelage for people to have.

and, you should have the ability to make more ranks in your alliance. 5isnt enough for the different roles we need.

They will get killed if the enemy Kingdom has their own spies, yes.

paul, i know i always reference utopia but would it be possible to make the spies have a slightly more dark aspect: assasinations, disruptions of commerce, kidnappings of peassies, wizard killings etc.

if spies kill spies then when I get a spy report it never says that you've killed enemy spies. and when I get spied on, my spies never die.

We're going to scrap the barns... not sure on the seasons as yet.

I think NW should be now solely based on kingdom acreage. Land is the most important resource in the game. Its a stable resource that can't be easily moved around thus preventing too much fluctuation in NW and would be hard to pass around in an alliance. Since you know that your the kingdom higher than you has a bigger land and does not necessarily represent a stronger armed forces, this would actually promote spying and attacking up instead of down. Its easier for everybody understand where NW is derived without elaborate computation worth of buildings and forces built and trained.

Of course there is always a downside. If an alliance gangs up on you and lose lots of land, it'll be real hard to recover and may actually frustrate some people and just give up. There will be less movement in the kingdom rankings and some people may find it boring and lose interest.

Or maybe you can implement this in the non-alliance server. I hope it comes out soon.

im not sure if this is happening with anyone else, but whenever I switch worlds I have to retype my username and password. it remembers me when I tell it to and I log in and out of the same world, but not when I switch worlds. cookies are set to "enable always"

hey, think I found a glitch here...

there is a new member in my alliance and when he replied to my invite to say thanks, I noticed that the invite that "I" sent him said that the invite was from "someone other than myself".

so I asked "someone other than myself" and he said that when I invited him the invite didn't have my name on it either.

maybe the system thinks that if it has my name on it, people won't accept lol

I'll look at the alliance information screen soon to increase the amount of information that can be displayed... as well as the new Forum Alliance priv's (Stickying/locking/deleting)

More new updates at kingdomgame.net - including interworld trading, ships and a myriad of other, smaller, changes..

.. interworld warring due this week and shortly thereafter colonies...
