Ripping Tv Shows Via HandBrake?

I recently got HandBrake and have been ripping dvd's like crazy. However, When i started ripping tv shows on dvd, the files would not go into the Tv Show section in iTunes rather the Movie section. Is there anyway I can rip my tv shows and have them the same layout as purchased tv shows?

You have to change them from Movie to TV Show using the get info command.

You can change the format by clicking "Get info" on the file in iTunes and going to one of the tabs and changing it to 'tv show'. Just play around a bit and you should see it.

You might want to check out this applescript (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makevideotags), from Doug's Applescripts. It will help you batch process lots of files at once.

Also, I would advise against using MetaX or Lostify for tagging because, in my experience, they have corrupted the video files forcing me to re-rip them one by one. For TV shows: I enter the title, show, episode, season, and album art (from Amazon) which does not take too long but provides sufficient information for iTunes to sort everything correctly.

I've not had any problems with MetaX and TV shows or movies. I love it.

MetaX is the best program I have seen for tagging TV shows and Movies. Very easy to use and it is free! Rip the show in Handbrake and then tag it with MetaX. Much more efficient.

I've processed over 300 movies through MetaX and have only 1-2 problems with it not being able to tag something. Never has it corrupted an mp4 or m4v.

The problem with this is that it's not permanent. Doing it in iTunes only lasts as long as that file is present in that library. If you refresh your library or move the file to a different computer, all those changes are gone. I can't tell you how many times I've individually tagged my music videos as such since they default to movies. Only the apple script (I think) or MetaX (I know) can actually tag the file itself so it remains that way. It's why I use MetaX exclusively. I have about 150 movies and 1000+ episodes of TV shows that I've tagged with MetaX and it's never corrupted a one. If I were you, I'd give it another chance.

Wow thanks guys! I never expected thease many posts hahha. I really appreciate it! I also use MetaX, and in my short 5 days of ripping/labeling. MetaX has been a life saver. Im an organization freak when it comes to tagging. Thanks again! :D

Wow. Quite the response. I've used MetaX to tag files referenced on an external HD and mainly played on an Apple TV and it has not worked well for me.

I guess I'll have to try it again.

I've been using Lostify since it was first available and have never had it corrupt a video file.

I use it instead of MetaX because it's more straightforward.

I`m sure MetaX makes a backup copy of your file, either by default or by changing one of the options, so even if something goes wrong you should always have a backup of the file. Even so I still make a backup of my file just incase, it only takes a few seconds.

Make sure you have the most updated version of both Handbrake AND MetaX. I ran into this a while back because Handbrake released an update and MetaX didn't for another week or so. I didn't think anything of it, and kept encoding during that week. Problem was, Handbrake had upgraded how it handled videos, and MetaX had no idea what to do with them, so it kept clearing them out. Once MetaX released their update to make them compatible with Handbrake, everything worked flawlessly again. Just something you may wanna check. In my opinion, Lostify is much more simple and plain than MetaX and would not be my first choice.

Every time I rip a season of a tv show on handbrake it won't sort out each individual episode. Instead, it keeps the whole thing together.. how can I get each individual episode ripped to my computer?

In the pull-down in Handbrake you should see each episode. For half hour shows, these are in the area of 22-23 min; for hour shows they're typically in the 43-44 min. Usually the first is the first episode on that disc, but not always.

That's why I use DVD player or VLC in tandem with HandBrake. They'll tell you what titles to choose in HB, so you don't pick a false title. Like the technique they use on the Lost DVDs (for example), using 99 title tracks.
