The beg to differ comment was aimed at the smart car.
It is from the London Metropolitan police, they bring it out for special occasions such as when the grand prix cars were messing about in London.
Just did a quick search an they even have a Murcielago LP640, so that is one if not three better.

Once upon a time I read an article about how the Dodge Magnum was going to become the go-to vehicle for US police agencies, taking over from the "crown vic" style cruiser. Better gas milage, storage, etc. Now, it's years later and I've yet to see a single one. So, maybe that was a plant article by Dodge. Also, this was before the Charger, so maybe that's taken over for the Magnum.
But I still think it'd make a sweet cruiser.

It's not like we don't have fast cars or people who drive fast.
Despite what the overlay says the top one doesn't have UK plates edit: Isle of Man
They are general purpose vehicles and are most often used for patrol motorways.

I know that they wouldn't use those on the highway. Horrible mpg and obviously not very fast. The police dept must go through a lot of oil and coolant though :p (referring to british car leaks)
My town is really getting into Ford Explorers cause we get a good amount of snow here in the winter. We have basically no crime here but for some reason my town spends loads of money on the police dept. They have like 3 cops (11,000 people in my town) on duty at a time yet they have like 10 police cars and a massive station. Thankfully parts of the building such as one of the conference rooms is sometimes used for meetings so the town can take advantage of the unnecessary space they have.

It's not always about how fast the car can go, it's mostly about the person sat behind the steering wheel. We have some of the best trained police drivers in the world.
I know that they wouldn't use those on the highway. Horrible mpg and obviously not very fast.
They are the main stay of British police on Motorways, those and Volvo T5's
As for not very fast, the new Ranger Rovers will do 0-60 in less than 10 seconds (Diesel 8.6 petrol 7.1) and the diesel tops out at 124MPH and the petrol tops out at 130MPH so yup, pretty quick. Oh and the diesel can get 31MPG while the petrol can do 23 MPG.
Oh and to finish off, My local Motorway police (http://www.west-midlands.police.uk/cmpg/about_vehicles.htm) and notice the cars they have.

The Mass State Police is now intergrating Dodge Charger's into the fleet:
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/7054/mass232py3.jpg
Pretty awesome.
Still, most of our fleet is Crown Vics, marked and unmarked, and then the upper brass get unmarked Taurus' or Chargers. That's not to mention the handful of unmarked, "stealth" black Mustang GTs (blacked out windows, dark non-state official plates) used for patrol, or the gas thirsty Explorers/Expeditions.

Immediately thought of Gumball Rally (the original couple who did the Police Car BMW - before imitators got in on the scene).
Some UK classics (Missing out a large chunk of Ford Police Car history).
I quite like the pimped out blacked out 4x4s they have doing undercover surveillance down in the South West Devon/Cornwall region. Makes a change to the Volvos on the motorway....
Edit: Can't belive anyone hasn't got a shot of the Highway Agency "Traffic Wombles" yet!
I'm up to my limit on this post for pictures. Could anyone oblige?

Yeah, those are new Chargers. I'm glad to see many departments are switching over to something more reliable, powerful, faster, and safer [than the age old Crown Vic].
The Crown Vic - apart from the fuel tank issues (which have been dealt with) - are extremely rugged and very safe. Ford has been lazy with development of the vehicle though. The engine gets a very conservative tune that makes it very reliable but a bit underpowered and fuel economy is only adequate.
The V8 Chargers are bad-ass but get awful gas mileage. The V6 version is about equal in performance to the Crown Vic except that it has superior brakes, which is a very nice feature. It would be nice to see better fuel economy from the V6 but Chrysler probably figured that as long as it was on par with the Crwon Vic it would be competitive.
I don't like the fact that a lot of police departments continue to buy SUVs and trucks - they suck fuel worse than the cars because none have diesels and they are not as safe on the road, especially for aggressive driving.
