How do I make the most of the zoom button on a small display?

Before I get flamed.. Yes, I understand the concept of the zoom button, it just seems impractical on my macbook to hit the zoom button only to have 30 pixels left on the side of my window where the desktop or another program shows. In my opinion, having that show through in the background is terribly distracting and just adds to screen clutter.

I understand that on a 30" display, the zoom button is practical and makes a lot of sense, but a 1280x800 laptop display is a whole different story.

Does anyone have any tips for me?
