No need to sign up for service when ordering. Just activate when you get it at home. Surprised this isn't posted.

Already have an iPhone, but figured at $249 that is an amazing deal - even cheaper than a 8GB ipod touch - so I went ahead and bought it and will probably either resell or give as a gift. Great find!!!

Hmm so I'll be able to order this, unlock it after I receive it (to use with T-Mobile) and then get rid of my crappy Windows Mobile phone? Hmm...

Wow, what a steal! Been procrastinating the iPhone for months now and had yet to come up with a convincing argument to commit, what with being a slave to T-Mobile and having recently acquired an 8GB Touch and all (not to mention that I've been kind of holding out for iPhone 2.0). But I'm thinking this is a no-brainer. I mean, I still see unlocked/jailbroken 8GB iphone's on craigslist and eBay for $450+. So I'm thinking I could potentially unload my hacked Touch (with case) for at least $200, which means a mere $49 difference. Sorry, just giddily thinking out loud here...

One question, though. I've never purchased refurbs before and have reservations about quality. So am I going to get a product that, if I didn't know it was refurbed, I'd think was brand new?

A couple more quick questions. Does the AT&T logo come somehow branded on the thing, and after it's hacked does said logo forever remain at the upper left side of the screen? And, yes, I realize how fairly nitpickey this is, but I guess for comfort's sake I'd rather see my own service provider up there.

I talked to the online rep, then just to be sure called AT&T sales to make sure. The iPhones are exchanges (they had something wrong with them, were repaired, then repackaged). So they will come in original packaging with all the normal items an iPhone comes with. They are covered by the same initial warranty as a new iPhone (so if you have an issue it can be exchanged for a new one).

If you jailbreak your iPhone the carrier logo can be removed or changed to anything you want (T-Mobile, your name, nothing at all, etc.) The AT&T logo appears no where on the iPhone's actual body.

Just placed my order, thanks so much to OP!

Well unless the phone ships with an ATT rep, there's no way they can force you to activate the phone with ATT. They are assuming most people don't know any better and won't think to do anything but get an ATT plan.

At least that's what I think.

AT&T is so blissfully ignorant to jailbreaking/unlocking that the activation process of the iPhone is their insurance you will contract or buy a pay-as-you-go plan.

All of this is detailed as you check out btw (it even OKs giving the referb iPhone as a gift), read the box you're checking agree to! :D

As for the unlock, not sure if this is ok to post here but:

How's that possible since they won't sell it to someone outside the US? There isn't even an option for shipping outside the US. And, the only way not to pay tax is if you live in a state that doesn't charge sales tax, because AT&T won't sell you the phone if you live in a state where they don't have coverage (therefore not charging sales tax for not having a presence).

How can you tell if your phone is a refurb?

any markings on the phone itself, or does it state so within the settings of the phone?

what stops ppl from reselling these at the full retail price

This is a no brainer, just ordered one. My wife has been after an iphone for a while, after using mine actually. But she doesn't agree with paying for a handset, she always gets the free nokias etc that are on offer in the UK.

I've had this shipped to our USA address and will bring it back to the UK when I'm next over..., she can sign up into a new contract as her current one has just finished, get a free nokia N85/95, sell it and it will more than cover the iphone.

Result, thanks for the info

i believe it's the part number that differs.
new iphone MA712LL/A
refurb iphone FA712LL/A

someone correct me if i'm wrong

as for reselling at retail price... hopefully the buyer is educated.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but ...

I've been waiting to get an iPhone till I move to NYC later this year (AT&T coverage isn't great where I currently live), but this price seems too good to pass up. Can I use the iPhone as an iPod without activating the phone or is it useless until the phone is activated?

I didn't purchase my refurbished iPhone online - I went to my local AT&T store instead - but I wanted to take a moment to thank the iPhone Forum for bringing the refurbished iPhones to my attention. I was on the fence about whether or not to buy an iPhone and this deal was just what I needed. I never would have learned about it had it not been for this forum. And now I have an iPhone and I'm loving it!

Really looking forward to the software upgrade and all the new programs that will be coming out. And if the 3G iPhone comes out later this year, I won't feel so bad replacing my phone considering I only spent $249 for it.

The iPhone is truly a remarkable device. If you're reading this and thinking about buying one, go for it!

This post is basically how I feel too. I was on the fence about waiting, but at $250 I just pulled the trigger and will try to use it on T-Mobile. If 3G comes out soon I can sell this one if need be, plus there is no gaurantee that the 3G phone will work on TMobile as I've read that the spectrums are different.

AT&T is now offering refurbished 8GB iPhones online (http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=Apple+iPhone+-+8+GB+(Refurb)&q_sku=sku1250005&source=IC980100110u9400) for only $249. They require a 2 year contract, and a limit of 1 per customer.

There had been rumors (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/03/01/refurbished-iphones-from-atandt/) of this deal at select retail AT&T stores, but this is the first we've seen it offered online.

$249 for an 8GB Refurbished iPhone represents a significant savings. A new 8GB iPhone currently retails for $399.

Refurb iphones are returned products that were either defective or no longer wanted by the owner (opened gift etc). Apple then meticulously inspects each iphone inside and out and replaces any parts that no longer work or are damaged.

In a sense they will look/act brand new. Some people actually prefer refurbs because they are more closely inspected then regular products coming off the line. In a sense they feel they are less likely to have a faulty product because of the rigorous inspection refurbs undergo.

I bought an 8gb yesterday. You do not need a contract to get the iphone. Just tell them you just want the phone, not contract. I told them I was buying as a present. Several people over at slickdeals.net have bought over the last week successfully without a contract.

P.S. they also have the 4GB for $199

I just bought an 8 GB iphone on wireless.att.com, and I didn't have to sign a contract. The website just says they you will be required to sign a contract when you activate through iTunes when you receive your phone with free 2-day shipping for $249 flat.

They only have 8 GB online as of right now. Maybe they'll add the 4's later? Who knows. You can't beat that price though.

Also, the only personal info I had to type in was my name, address, home phone and credit card. They didn't ask for a SSN or other info usually required when you sign a contract online. Hence, no contract signed until you activate through iTunes.

EVERYONE NEEDS AN IPHONE!!!

pretty sure AT&T wont force you to sign a contract. when you purchase from the apple store they have your info if paid with a credit card. on the other hand if you go to a AT&T store they might trick you into signing a contract. but in reality the iphone sales are different because the only discount you'll get is refurbished ones, there are no rebates. but feel free to disagree.

Ordered mine. Wonder how many they have. I waited until the local ATT store was open, not until 10am, to find they don't have them in that store, at least. Was worried that they might be out by the time I got around to it, but the order went thru.

3G won't be available around here for ages, and I don't need to download all that much on the road anyway. My wife loves the idea of carrying baby photos and such.

I have bought many Apple refurbs, and save for the refurb packaging, they are otherwise perfect. You should not worry about getting a sub-standard product. They are NOT display models.

I just bought one for the wife. She has been wanting one since they first came out. This offer is too good to pass up (until apple drops prices) if you are in the market for an iPhone.

This may be a minor confirmation of rumors that Apple will drop the price by $100 in the near future. It would be great if Apple introduced a 32GB model with 3G at the same time. But maybe they're saving that for June.

Price drop to $299 is unlikely. More likely is the TEMPORARY price drop to $299 to get rid of the new 8 Gig phones (like they did with the 4 Gig ones). The 16 Gig will be the mainstream, $399 one...

It does seem like a no-brainer. There's no way for AT&T to bill us for a plan later when they discover that we havne't activated through AT&T, is there? I checked the "Terms & Conditions" document, and although it states that "*All plans require a 2-year AT&T service agreement, an activation fee, and are subject to AT&T credit approval," it doesn't actually state that one must buy a plan with the phone! ;)

One other thing: I asked about the warranty, and the AT&T representative (they're idiots!) claimed that the refurbs wouldn't carry a full one-year warranty but rather the amount of time left on the warranty since the date when the iPhone was originally purchased.

Has anyone else asked about this? Confirm?

I used ziphone on the last phone I unlocked (my friend's iPhone).

I plan on using it on this refurbished one - I'm paranoid that the phone I've got is going to get lost/stolen/broken.

I plan on having this as a backup (I can go to T-Mobile for a replacement SIM).

It only has to last until 2011 - when AT&T is no longer exclusive in the US, and the obvious other carrier to start carrying it is T-Mobile...

If you buy ANY iPhone, that's the agreement on the box. Activation through AT&T.

They may not have the full 1 year, but are eligible for Apple Care.

You can check the item's warranty status here (for anything Apple):

https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

If you unlock or jailbreak the phone, warranty is void anyways...

EDIT: I tried the above link with my iPhone - Apple says it's "Not Activated". I guess that's right - no warranty until activation...

If you unlock or jailbreak the phone, warranty is void anyways...

EDIT: I tried the above link with my iPhone - Apple says it's "Not Activated". I guess that's right - no warranty until activation...

So what have people done with a malfunctioning iPhone? They can be restored to a factory-fresh state, but I suppose it would be hard to prove that the phone is malfunctioning then, wouldn't it?

Bad touchscreens or switches can be proven in a factory-fresh state. Anything else you're screwed...

Finally, I can be complete person. But seriously, this is a great deal and it's made me wonder, used iPhones on ebay can sell up to 375 bux. If they revamp the iPhone for 3g, etc, in June, will these 8gb, edge machines be suddenly lowered in value? Would I be able to unload it for the chance to get some money back to get a new one?

Just take good care of it and you'd be able to sell it.

The people buying them are probably unlockers and then shipping them overseas to countries that don't get the iPhone at all...

They have to purchase as many of them as possible from many sources as usually there are limits that Apple and AT&T put on selling them to individuals.

I just ordered one as a potential present but we'll see...with the rumor of a $100 price drop and the potential for the 8GB being phased out, not to mention the likelihood of a 3G announcement within a few months, it might be a better present to return it, wait a few months, and buy the new cheapest model for $300-$400.

All right, all right, I ordered one too. I haven't decided how long I'll keep it, and whether I'm going to keep T-Mobile with no contract or go to AT&T. But $249 is really quite a price. I'll try it out, see if I can give up my Berry, and go from there... :)

I'm wondering if you could buy the applecare for a refurb through AT&T? Does anyone know this one?

Not sure about buying AppleCare from AT&T for a refurbished iPhone, but you can still purchase AppleCare directly from Apple for your refurbished iPhone. Like any other AppleCare coverable product, you have until the end of your one year warranty to do so. Doesn't make any difference if the product is brand-new or refurbished. (Hope this gives you something to work with.)

anyone think this might be apples way of testing the waters and see how the profit difference is if they lower the price $100? Hypothetically even if they make less off each phone but sell more, profit might be the same, and iphones would be everywhere creating even more revenue. :apple::apple::apple:

Sounds like they are clearing the inventory of 8 Gig phones, either that or they are selling real bad..

To me this means that they will discontinue this phone, and go with either the 16 only or introduce a 32 Gig version.

Once the 8 Gig version is all gone they 'will likely drop the 16 Gig by 100.

You can try...I did but they wanted $750 deposit so I walked in with my mother. Nothing stopped me from getting this phone. Now that I have I don't know why I waited so long. And you can get the family plan and have the iphone data plan for just yours. Trust me...before I purchased the iphone I researched every aspect of it. I spent the $400 but it didn't bother me; I'd rather be the first person to open the box than the second. But that's just me plus my boss was uber generous so she bought it rather than me. The point....there are alternatives if you lack the credit needed for the phone.

No, but you can simply unlock it with Ziphone and then plop in your SIM and it'll work :) ziphone is ridiculously simple and fast... youc an probably even avoid the actual unlock and simply activate it with ziphone, since you are using an att sim. worst case though, you simply press a diff button

Yes, I got that too. I'm bummed... and praying for the 3 day (so I get it Friday!)

On another note, I've got a really stupid question. I'm assuming that iPlus is the way to go for unlocking/activating/jailbreaking, and I'm assuming that it's easiest on a windows machine. If I do all that on a windows machine, can I take the phone and plug it into my Mac to do iTunes management or will I be forced to "reset" it to be used for Mac? If I reset it for Mac, will I have to re-jailbreak, etc?

Thx!

The $1 should just be a placeholder -- it's the way the credit card system works. They're allowed to make a pending charge pending the final calculation of costs, and then they just adjust it. It doesn't get credited back -- it just never gets confirmed and gets deleted / disappears. It shouldn't even show up on your statement.

Well, mine is still pending on my card; $265 is still a good deal, and it's not too surprising, since AT&T certainly has a local presence, which as I understand it, requires them to collect sales tax.

Yeah, you know, I guess I'm just unsure about the bootloader thing. Being that this is a refurb, and I'll be using it unlocked on TMobile, I want it to be as clean as possible in case something needs to be replaced again. I must have gone through 4 Treo 600 refurbs when they came out, so I know it can happen. I'd like to purchase Applecare too for the same reason, but the "voiding warranty" and bootloader things has me being cautious. I want to know that I can restore it to factory defaults and not have Apple question it. For that reason, I've decided on iPlus rather than ZiPhone (unless you can talk me out of it)

If your mom has survived this long w/o an Iphone, she can wait just a bit longer.

One word: Karma

someone who could care less about other people is gonna whip out a smart comment about should have been quicker, or something to the effect. ............but I'm going to tell you karma is an inescapable certainty and when you're laying on that hospital bed looking at the waiting list for that liver or kidney - you're next on the list and some celeb with $250,000 to spare slides in and takes your organ right in front of you.........well you should have been quicker, eh? Just an example..... not quite on the same level of a sold out phone.

It's really not that serious, but karma doesn't seem to care when it comes back around. She's not dying for one so no setback on her part, but I'm sure someone out there was and it might have been a big deal for them to get one. She'd have "liked" to have had one. No strong feelings about it either way.

Personally, bought mine for full price and love it so whatever. :) Hope they get them restocked for the others that just want to buy ONE.

These things have their ways of balancing out anyways...

If your mom wants one so bad for $250, tell her to shop around at ATT brick & mortar stores... They got them!

Ok, so my wife and I have a family plan on AT&T.

I have an iPhone and she a Nokia 6555. When I get this and plug it in to her iTunes I'll be able to transfer her number over to it? Or should I switch SIMs or what? They won't know where she got the phone right? Couldn't she just tell them someone gave it to her and she wants to use it instead of the Nokia and add the data plan or is there some sort of :apple: iStipulation that you get a 2 year contract extension?

Just wondering as it wasn't entirely clear...

I believe you do this (not 100% sure since I'm gonna be using T-Mobile but I assume it's pretty similar).

Install itunes
Insert old att sim card
Check the version of iPhone
Use ziPhone to unlock

Soon after, phone will detect network and display ATT/cingular
Make a test call successfully.

Not really sure with AT&T. I know with T-Mobile, I can just add on a data plan for $20 and be done with it. Not sure if AT&T has anything similar. They may or may not since the iPhone is technically exclusive to them.

You do not even need the $20 plan. just add t-zones for $6, does the same thing although you will need to jailbreak the phone to get it to work.

and they appear gone. wow. that didn't take long.

i ordered one last night. it said free two day shipping on it, but then on the final page it said 3-5 business days ... anyone else get that too?

That's what mine said as well. I think it's a CYA move because you order it on X day and then it takes two days to get there. Therefore the 3 days. I don't think it's guaranteed there in 2 days.

I have been having the same problem, so I called AT&T directly, and they said that your order has to go through a "review". I then asked how long that takes, and she said 48 hours! So it has to be reviewed for 2 days before it even ships!

That is just stupid, I order it with 2 day shipping, I expect to get it in 2-3 days.

$249 no sales tax and no delivery charge for 2-day priority shipping at time of order. There was no indication of any hidden fees when I ordered and I doubt any will show up when I activate.

I already doesn't matter, since there are no more, but here is whats at the bottom of the Order Confirmation page. Note how taxes aren't included. Your CC bill reflects them.

= = =

*"Total Due Monthly/Sub-Total" does not include applicable taxes, Pay Per Use charges, State and Federal Universal Service Charges, Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee and other surcharges. Please visit discretionary charges to view the estimates of the discretionary charges for your area. Your first month's statement will include a one-time activation fee, prorated monthly charge, as well as one month's charge in advance. If you are keeping an existing plan, the monthly fees you already pay will not be reflected in the shopping cart. GoPhone accounts do not include an activation fee.

** Total due today excludes taxes and rate plan activation charge.

When did you order? I ordered mine yesterday at 2pm CST, and did receive an email confirmation but no shipping confirmation, and my order still doesn't appear under order status (https://www.wireless.att.com/order_status/order_status).

What sorts of delays are people seeing between order time and actual shipping time?

I'm not in a rush -- I need to make sure everything gets off my Blackberry and back into iCal and Address Book before I let the iPhone take over anyway, and I need to prune my inbox.

Oh, back to the iPlus topic, I did my research, and now I see where you're coming from. Since iPlus 2.0c works on PPC Macs, I think I'll probably go that way also and try to use the "fakeblank" bootloader.

Right, there's two theories at this point :
1. They're completely sold out of refurbed iPhones at this time

2. They're having issues with their ordering processes, so they've taken the refurb iPhone page down for the time being

Maybe right now they are soon to be refurbished...waiting from the plant to process/release them.
If they think that by this, they will have new customers, they are dreaming and that most of the people buying them are going to unlock them or re-sell them to someone who will also unlock them.

Not everyone is 19 with a pocket protector sitting on the internet cashing three ip's and snarfing over the Wiki entry they just did about their great deviance.

There are a lot of people who get screwed that should have gotten one honestly that are "normals".

I have my 8g I bought brand new so I don't particularly care, but my mother was sent a link to get one and I find out the people hoarding 5 and ten at a time have screwed her out of a chance to buy one.

I got away buying 50... LOL

If it makes you feel better, I got one for my Mom... Wait- she can barely use the basic Motorola Boost Mobile phone I got her.

Looks like this one's a backup for the one I've got. ;)

With these Apple refurbs, ya snooze, ya lose..

Funny, I'm writing this on my new Black MacBook refurbed (same went with that one).

Keep looking first thing in the morning - with all the iPhones being sold, you're bound to get one. Maybe a 16 Gig for $299? :D

Ordered mine Tues a.m. around 10. Got the conf. email with an order number yesterday soon after. Checked the number via the AT&T site this a.m. and got nothing but the dreaded red "can't find a thing buddy" message. I called because I noticed there weren't any more listed and the lady on the phone called over somewhere and confirmed it was received and will ship within 24 hrs. Got THAT email this morning and I'm all set and waiting. Should arrive Friday.

After watching the 20 minute demo vid on apple.com I'm realizing this will go down as the coolest gadget I've ever owned.

what stops ppl from reselling these at the full retail price
The fact it's being sold by someone other than AT&T or Apple?

Same thing that keeps people from selling any cell phone not still sealed in plastic as a new phone.

Hi! New to the forum but I have been lurking for 2 years.

In China right now, but I had to jump on this deal. $250 was the sweet spot for me to experiment with unlocking an iPhone for Tmobile.

Anyway, just got the backorder email. Very weird. Doesn't list a date, just says special order. Also says the "accessory" is in stock. So what are they going to ship me the power cord? If it doesn't ship within the month I think I will just go buy one since I have already convinced myself I'd be an iPhone owner when I return to Texas on Monday. :)

Dear XXXXXX,

Thank you for choosing AT&T. We’re glad to have you join the largest digital voice and data network in America. One or more item(s) is/are currently out of stock and on backorder. The expected delivery time of your order is listed below.

Yeah, unfortunately, I got the same e-mail... on my blackberry, it looked like total spam. But it seems to be legitimate:

I got the same backorder email and when I tried to check online status It could not find the order at all. I tried the phone numbers in the email and it still told me that my order would ship in 24 hours.

I just got off the phone with someone from ATT. I used the number on the backorder email. I told them that my email said the iPhone was backordered but their automated system said my order would be shipped within 24 hours. She asked me a lot of questions before she'd tell me anything then she said that the phones were backordered but they were getting in plenty today to ship out. She was adamant about the order shipping within 24 hours. She was sure of it.

Bottom line, she told me that backordered phones are going to be in their warehouse today. As soon as they have them, they are going to send them out to us. Looks like I'll be getting mine Saturday at the soonest, probably next week.

I got the backordered e-mail as well. The rep I talked with said they didn't know when it would ship, but that it would ship when they got more in.

Also, she said I wouldn't be charged until the order was fully processed and charged.

I ordered mine on Tuesday and I called today to get the status of my order. They said it was on backorder.

I asked "How can it be on backorder if it's refurbished?"

She said they thought they had a bigger shipment than they actually had or something like that.

They must be getting these refurbs directly from Apple, is my only guess.

Apple did have some 8GB's up for $349 and they took them down about the time AT&T starting selling them for $249.

If no one else does, sure. Of course, I'm also getting my new Macbook (my first Mac) today so hopefully I won't be too distracted. I hope I love both these new toys. :D

I was one of the few who ordered a refurbished 8gb iphone from att.com for 250 and would like to know if other people who ordered the same have had them shipped or have had any status updates on when they will arrive. I just got an email from att saying that mine was backordered and called customer support. They told me there was an overwhelming response to the iPhones (no ****** Att) and that they expected more in around 3 days. Any of your guy's ship yet?

Curse trying to actually do work (and by actually doing work, I just mean apparently surfing for other stuff instead of iPhone deals)... I placed my order at about 5PM EDT. Ahhh, well. It'll come when it'll come. :)

I am kind of shocked, though, that AT&T has such a poorly designed order fulfillment system on their webpage. Companies like Newegg that are far tinier than them do much better. And it hardly pushes me in the direction of giving in and switching to AT&T so I get visual voicemail....
