View Full Version : Ban Hipsters from Apple Stores who spend their time dicking around on Facebook.

Isn't it just so annoying! I went ALL the way into London's Regent Street store the other day from my home in Oxfordshire to demo a MacBook and it was full up of irritating people dicking around on Facebook. There was even one 8ish year old playing music videos on YouTube.

I'm sure if you mentioned to one of the staff that you would like a demo of a macbook so that you can buy it, they would have made a plan to get you some mac-time.
BTW: Isn't the Bull Ring store closer to Oxford. I never see any hippies/hipsters on facebook in there.

How about "Ban people from starting pointless threads!"
This has been discussed before. Apple clearly allows people to come in and use a machine as long as they wish. If you TRULY were in the market to buy then you would have taken a step towards an employee and asked him/her if they could assist you in getting some computer time. I believe the employees are very receptive to this type of request. They were when I wanted to use a 30" just to test it on my PB. By them kicking the guy off the MacPro they risked a potentially larger sale but I was clearly there to buy while the guy was clearly there to try.
In my opinion many people aren't there to buy but if giving an indefinite amount of time to a person to use a machine turns into a purchase then it was time well spent.
Hippies or hipsters I think your complaint lacks merit.

If you are going by public transport, then Regent Street is probably the quickest to get to, but if you are going by car then Solihull or Milton Keynes are probably quicker to get to.
@ OP the Regent Street store always has problems like this, and offers slow service, I don't think they have a great manager.

Yes! You can't get near a computer you want to look at with a view to buying in the Apple store on Regent Street in London for all the damn tourists and students checking their mail and surfing the web.
It's really off putting if you are trying to buy something.

I'm all for them kicking people off when they're messing around, but in one instance where I was considering one but didn't want some help, I got kicked off for some training. Only problem I had with that was that there were a bunch of 14 year olds all over the store just standing around taking myspace pictures and clearly not even doing anything to signify buying. Couldn't the guy have asked any of them?

You can't get near a ruddy Genius or any member of staff on Regent's Street.
My brand new MBP has a flickering screen issue and Apple say I have to take it in to Regent's Street for a Genius to look at but I just can't face standing in a que all day.
The number of times I've been in there, tried to ask a question about something I wanted to buy and just given up and gone home in frustration...

Because he just kept pressing random "buttons"...
And he obviously wasn't going to buy one, yet someone who may potentially spend money on one (although put off by the tariff'; a story not for this thread, though) was not able to demo the unit because the kids was using it. Darn kids. Dicking around with fun things.

You think the stores are just for buying. You're wrong, and that's your problem, not theirs. The store is for touching and playing around, too. I guess you've never seen anything you liked while simply browsing a store with no intention to buy anything.
The responses posted so far are amazing.
Well it's a HUGE store on Regent Street.
If they got their act together they could have the whole of the downstairs area, which is vast, for dicking around , and the smaller upstairs area for people who actually want to look at the computers instead of Facebook.

If I was manager of that store I certainly wouldn't let children monopolize the computers.
It might be hard to police, so easiest thing is to just not have Internet on the computers. Everyone knows what the Internet is anyway, no need to demo that. iPhoto, Garageband etc need demoing.

Why? Those kids grow up and become consumers some day...
They also have long lasting memories of bitter situations. Besides, there's got to be a handful of them who have parents with money.
I know my kid sits at the kids games table and plays while I'm shopping for more stuff I don't really need, so I guess I would be really pissed if you kicked him off just because you didn't think kids should play with computers.
I don't know, that's just me though...

They've blocked MySpace, but not Facebook. I suppose it's because they have a (relatively) good relationship with Facebook, what with the web app on their commercials and all.
There are three stores in my area, two are in suburbia with suburban high school girls obnoxiously using PhotoBooth before realising MySpace is blocked, and the third is in the center of town in a high end shopping district, but it is always jammed with about two or three hundred people in it and too few employees to service them all.
I saw the manager checking out the store yesterday, and I said to the person I was with, pretending I didn't know the manager was there, that I can never find a mac specialist to talk to.
Oh, and the other thing about these obnoxious girls is that I go to school with a lot of them, and obviously friends with them on Facebook, and their profile photos they took always look so tacky because you can clearly see they took they photos in an Apple store.

If you think Regent Street is bad, wait till you see the Bentall Centre Apple Store. Always full of loud chavs using Photo Booth and playing music.
Also, when in the Regent Street Store, the thing that annoys me the most is when people tear open iPod/iPhone case boxes to try them out, then shove them back into the boxes the wrong way, before hanging the box up in completely the wrong place!

I know that Apple advertises on Facebook and I'm sure Facebook uses Macs internally but I highly doubt Apple owns a 10% stake in Facebook, especially when Microsoft fought hard to get 1.5%.

I'm going to say it isn't true cause I don't think Apple has any stake in Facebook. Other than the venture capitalists who have put in money, Microsoft is the only large corporation to have a small stake in Facebook.

The weirdest thing I've ever seen... was a bunch of 16 year old kids... carrying their guitars on their back walking around the store. Now, this store is most certainly not within walking distance of any venues, or any residential areas... so I'm pretty sure they actually made the effort to drive to the mall, and put their guitars and what not on their backs, and walk into the apple store.
How utterly stupid.

We looked around and was there for about a hour and the whole time we were there this guy was still on the Mini just listening to music. She got an imac and I told her she'll be happy with that.
Sorry, I found this rude and if you're not buying something you should be nice and move over for people who are buying or looking to buy.

I went for an interview at an Apple Store once, and they told me they want to make the computers open for everybody to use just like your home computer. It's a lot better than the PC store system where every machine is password protected and some moron stands over your shoulder when you try it out.
Also, Apple has more to sell than just the hardware - they have to sell the hardware + software combo. That requires the ability to test it.
Locking facebook is a good move. People should be able to test it and use it like their own computer, but there are reasonable limits.

The Apple store near me has ALL their computers locked out from anyone to use. If you want to test one out you need to speak to a genius so they can log in for you and show you all the cool features of OS X and maybe sell you a computer.
You can still check out the web from an ipod touch set up but it is very slow to load pages.

In some ways I could see how its good to keep their store full, most consumers crave something that everyone else does, they see a store full of people and wonder what they are missing out on.
In other ways they should keep a section open just for the genius's to show you the computers/features if you are serious about buying.
Lets also not forget that kid's parents buy them everything under the sun these days so it could lead to some sales later down the line.
