I see many forums where people post images taken directly off their displays, for example of iStat.
How is it done?

Shift-Command-3 for the whole screen and Shift-Command-4 for a part of it, in case you did not search yet :D

Or read the guide I linked which has all the keyboard shortcuts, along with other useful info on the topic :rolleyes:
