for my macbook I am looking at getting a 7200 RPM sata drive for it. I have the new macbook with the penyrn, does any one know how much the battery life would cut down and if it would make that big of a difference?

Not to hijack your thread but I was wondering, about exactly how big difference there is in overall speed and performance between 7200rpm and and 5200rpm?

MBs use 2,5 HDDs right? I wonder if all these drives, even across manufactureres and storage capacity have the same weight. If you would upgrade your MB would it be possible that the HDD would become more heavy?
a 250 GB HDD weighs more than a 160 GB HDD for example?

I have a 2.16ghz May 2007 MacBook Black and I get great battery life with the 5400 rpm drive. If you really really want a 7200 drive, just get it and don't worry about the small diff in battery life. Try searching google, I am pretty sure there were some tests done awhile ago concerning this very thing

I just upgraded my 5400 80gb HD in my Macbook to a 7200rpm 200gb HD.

As far as battery life goes, I can't really tell much of a difference. Maybe there's a 20min-30min hit but I don't usually monitor my battery that much. It's not hours shorter or anything though.

As far as performance goes, I love it. Previously after booting Firefox would take maybe 10 bounces but now it takes about 5. Large photoshop files open really quickly too compared to my old HD.

I'd recommend it if you can get ahold of a good deal. I got my 7200rpm 200gb 16mb cache for $120 :)
