Can I use my iPhone to connect my MacBook Pro to the internet in Europe

I want to use use my MacBook Pro to access weather information (iPhone screen is too small) on a sailing trip in the Mediterranean. Can I use my iPhone to get O2 network access or would it be better with a USB wireless modem?
 
USB Modem would be easier, since the only way I know to tether requires Jailborking.
