Refurb iPhone ?

I just received my refurbished iphone from at&t. The wifi works right out of the box and it hasn't prompted me to activate it. If I plug it into my computer to try and throw some tunes on it, will I be stuck activating it?

My Verizon contract ends in a few weeks, and I'm just looking to use it as an iPod/wifi, hopefully update the software, and not void the warranty.

My understanding is a new one usually won't let you do anything with it until it's activated.

I got mine today and mine too doesn't require the activation when I first turn it on, but after I update it the activation screen on the iphone wouldn't go away.

So I'm not sure about trying to sync it, but don't update it that's for sure.
