I never understood why cinemas, museums, public transport centers, and other places with payment booths must have glass over it and have the clerk speak through a microphone.

Does anyone know why?

Bullet-proof glass has the amazing quality of being, well, bullet-proof. 😉

And yes, I'd say it could save a considerable amount in cooling/heating, even indoors. Also, besides keeping the hot/cold in, it also keeps the cold/hot out, so that the clerks are protected from the elements.
 
maybe its just an element of the movie going experience that they have kept over the years
 
Some "Guests" can get very p*ssed at what you (the person behind the safety glass) might tell them. I've had my share and heard some stories.

People don't steal movie tickets, they steal the cash in the drawer from all the other people buying movie tickets.

It's probably based on the area the cinema/gas station/subway station is located and previous incidents. Also, I'm sure those bullet proof "bubbles" are expensive to install for companies that can't afford it/are to cheap.
 
Traditionally there used to be a cash business, and used hold quite a bit.

Several people were shot at movie theaters when i lived in Chandler.

However things have changed a bit with prebought tickets and greater use of plastic, but that still doesn't stop the morons who continue to rob 7-11s for $50.
