Security Update 2003-11-04

Apple released a Security Update for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) today:

Security Update 2003-11-04 addresses a potential vulnerability with the Terminal application in Mac OS X v10.3 and Mac OS X Server v10.3 that could allow unauthorized access to a system.


Xcode 1.0.1:


The Xcode Update addresses an issue in the Xcode IDE that could potentially lead to data corruption or the loss of files particularly when source files contain illegal characters. This update is strongly recommended for all Xcode users.

They also released an xCode update, for those who installed the developer tools.

I was expecting to see a 10.2 security update as well, given the bad press they got last week over security holes still to be patched. Maybe we still will see that...

I'd say early December. 10.2.1 came out about 6 weeks after Jag was initially released, at least for developers.

That's good. Security is a good thing. Bravo Apple for keeping OS 10.3 safe.

I am 6 computers into a 10 computer Panther upgrade. I have a few bugs that are annoying me. However I have to give Apple credit, It does work pretty well for a System that has only been public for a week.

I am glad they are giving up the updates as soon as they have them ready though. A six month wait would annoy me! :D

I have never understood why people update to the first major revisions of software and hardware. Nearly without fail some inconsistency, conflict or calamity awaits the early adopters.

Its not just Apple, it's EVERY application and OS and new machine ever spawned for the last 15years of my career at least. And Apple are not the worst, at least not these days.

Anyone remember OS7-9 and the inevitable extension conflicts when ANYTHING was changed or updated by 3rd Party software or Apple. Machines could simply utterly fail to restart at all, let alone function properly. I seem to remember Suitcase and ATM as being prime candidates for this sort of thing.

And heaven help you if you stuffed up your SCSI ids when you plugged in that new scanner or whatever. It's is all generally much better now.

Hey, its only commonsense, software/hardware guys are only human and nothing can be tested absolutely in all configurations.

So I always wait (if I can) for the Rev B Hardware and the .1 update!

But I suppose if it wasn't for the early adopters, I would have to wait longer Apple to find all the bugs for the revision ;)

I have no patience whatsoever, and must always be at the "forefront". Therefore, I'm one of those chronic early adopters. Hardware and software. I've purchased the "Rev. A" versions of the last three editions of powermacs and a "rev.a" 12-inch powerbook. OS X 1.2 and 1.3 on the day they were released. Prior to switching in 2001, I installed Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95 and 98 on the day pf release. Going even further back, I bought the first Apple //c to arrive in the Detroit area. The end result: I've never experienced a problem as a result of being first at the gate.

Perhaps I lead some sort of charmed existence...:eek:

Well if no one updated to the latest and greatest, then we would never find the bugs.

Ok, ya I bought panther hoping that it would imporve my system not give it more vunerabilities. I understand that the the first rev.s of any product are buggy, but this is apple. I was hoping that they fixed these problems with 10.2, which didn't seem too buggy at first. Also if you havn't noticed Apple is starting to sound like M$. Apple has a pretty good rep, I just don't want it beeing runined by lack of developer testing and quality control.

Don't take me wrong I love apple and being a early adopter. I would have personally been able to wait a month, and still be an early adopter. And for all you who wanted the future products now, just keep your pants on, it's not like the PC world is gonna catch up with apple anytime soon.

I think Apple has a way to go before being on that level. Once Apple starts releasing serious updates every week, and if you can't reinstall the OS without getting infected by the Blaster worm, then yes, but Apple is far from that.

No one is going to waste their time writing a virus for the Mac, while viruses are written for windows as soon as an update is released. So I wouldn't worry about the updates too much.

I don't think Apple is going the way of MS as it would take MS around 4-6 months to release a sec. update and they only release major updates every 2 yrs!

I love it when Apple puts out update before some sec. site issues a warning..it means Apple is on the ball will other OS's fail to do so.

Agreed - If problems surface quick resolution is appreciated. I think the point being made is that perhaps QC was rushed a tad on this release.

I moved from Winders to avoid this hassle.

Well my client wanted to upgrade from OS 9 to os X in May. I talked them out of upgrading to Jaguar since a PAID upgrade was so close around the corner. And as the months dragged on they became more and more impatient. They are pretty happy with it. Well actually they love OS X. But I am the one fighting with the problems. (But my biggest problems revolve around printing in classic and Outlook 2001 in Classic.)

I do have one or two design changes for Apple. (I know this probably should be in another thread but....)

In the finder I wish they would keep the drive that you are on highlighted. I had one user today clicking on a shortcut to another drive and getting confused about what drive he was on.

Also I am still trying to figure out the fastest way to navigate to different servers. But so far I am unimpressed and I like Jag's networking interface better.

I do like the new internet connect interface and expose rocks. (Is there a command to minimize all windows like Windows show desktop? That is something I would like to know how to do.)

Heaven forbid the day it ever happens... There is a general complacency that I myself, also subscribe to, but I think the overall attitiude to our apparent immunity from viruses is going to be our downfall.

I was so eager to see how panther was on my ibook/600 no QE I couldn't control myself. As the ibook is my main computer, I was hoping I wouldn't feel as needy for some new hardware. I just hope 10.3.1 comes as soon as possible, especially for the sake of all this data corruption stuff. I'm scared to use my fw400 drive, no matterwhat any of the sites say.

Try F11. Hit it again to put everything back. See the Expose Prefs to modify the keys that do this.

You might want to try setting a "hot corner" for Expose. I have the "all windows"setting set for whenever I put my mouse (a trackpad actually, heh) in the lower left hand corner. Works great. Also, I have the lower right hand corner set to lock and turn on my screensaver.

God, I love my Mac!:D

I've as yet been unable to load the new software update. Every time I install it, it rears up again on the next software update check. Its like a bad penny...

Thanks for the tip! Works great!

And thanks sethypoo for the hot corner tip. Although I am not big on hot corners. (Sometimes my optical mouse freaks out and activates hot corners.)

Yeah, I have that too. What kind of mouse do you have? I have the Logitech Dual Optical mouse and love it to bits & pieces, but indeed the pointer sometimes shoots off to some random place on the screen. Would that be the surface one uses his or her mouse on? Could that couse the problems?

For all the hassles, Panther was well worth the money. Significantly better than Jaguar.
