Maximum resolution AppleTV will play?

Here we go, hopefully this doesn't break the rules, but I have a BUNCH of DVDs that I want to rip to send to my AppleTV, and I've found that I can download copies of my DVDs from the internet that are already ripped/encoded, from HD sources, so ultimately I can get better quality rips than I could do from the DVD, with less time consumption.

My question is, will the AppleTV play 720p videos encoded to MPEG4 from HD / Blu-Ray source?

And I thought I read somewhere that if the file was over 4gb it can't be streamed to the AppleTV ?

It depends on how your equipment performs. Clearly, the Apple TV will display 720p 24fps, since that is what you can rent from the ITMS.

It (apparently) does better with 1080p source material than 720p source material for conversion purposes.

The 4 GB limit is an old one. The new 64bit H.264 files have no such limit. iTunes, QuickTime and Apple TV can all handle files of large size. In addition, encoding programs such as Handbrake, and tagging programs like MetaX, will handle large files.

AppleTV outputs 720p as it's top resolution, so anything you encode from other HD sources can only be as good as 720P. I f you can encode it to 720P (H.264), it'll play!

You might try looking at the :apple:TV Tech Specs page (http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html) Apple has helpfully provided. The section on Video Formats Supported contains the information you are seeking.

The SOURCE evidently converts better (to 720) if it is 1080p.
