Iphoto , Imovie..my digital camera

New here...my digital camera takes both photo's and limited movies ( .avi ) format. When I download from my camera to Iphoto...all gets downloaded into an event.

The photos work well but the movies appear as all black with an avi designation. If I try to play the movie, it appears to play but no video.

How do I get these movie clips in my Iphoto to play in my Imovie?

They're using a format that your Mac doesn't support. Download MPEG StreamClip and see if you can convert them to H.264 or QuickTime format. I routinely do this with video from my digital camera to make it more manageable.
