The latest album I ordered was Ingrid Michaelson's LP... I should get it next week.

Latest, hmmm let's see I think I'll list the ones I haven't yet listened to more than oh, 25 times :-)
OK, here goes, from latest to earliest in the last month:
Amy Macdonald--This Is The Life. Surprisingly good--I had heard the first couple of songs on the radio and thought I'd give the whole thing a chance, mostly thinking it'd be one of those things where only the two songs you got on the radio are any good. But it isn't. all the songs are real good, both music and lyrics, I love her voice, and this is just an all around great record! I recommend this album!
Johnny Cash--The Best Of Sun Recordings. Neat! Lots of rock-'n-rollish things. The Wreck of the Old 97 is a favorite. It's weird how his voice doesn't sound as deep as in some of the later stuff, that I got to hear first! Oh hold on that's not really an album though is it, but a compilation? Ah well
James Blunt--All The Lost Souls. OK. I got it 'cause I liked his first, but this is less nice, some tracks I love, others I really can't be bothered with, but overall I wish he'd get rid of that corny '70s style production. his voice is kind of weird (in an interesting way) and original, and his tunes and lyrics are also nice enough that there's no need for the fussy trimmings. Ah well, I'll still buy the next one (probably)
The new Dropkick Murphys one--The Meanest Of Times. Haven't listened to all of it actually, 'cause I went and bought it in the vinyl edition, since I've been wanting to try out something of the stuff I really like in vinyl to see what all the enthusiasm is about. But then my folks' old, but excellent quality turntable had a problem, and I couldn't! Argh! What I did get to hear sounded pretty good though; usual Murphys fare but bloody good all the same.

Today I bought Pretty. Odd. by Panic at the Disco. I've been waiting a very long time for it. Right now its on that grow on me stage, the first album I loved right off the bat, sooo I don't know...I still really like some of the songs.
And yesterday I bought the new album from The Hush Sound.
Last week I bought Odd Couple by Gnarls Barkley A++:D.
Anyone prefer buying albums from Amazon? It feels really naughty using it for some reason..but I mean, a dollar less, unprotected, and 256kbps, I can't pass that up.

Duff-Man says....I got a few in the mail:
Nick Cave "Dig Lazarus Dig - after a couple listens I'd have to say it is certainly not one of his better albums
Goldfrapp "Seventh Tree" - very very good. I think they did the right thing by not trying to copy the last couple albums
Killing Joke "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns" - the new reissue that restores the original Chris Kimsey mixes...much better than the mixes on the original release
Also have a few more on the way:
Barry Adamson "Back to the Cat" - Really looking forward to this one, he's never disappointed me yet
Van der Graaf Generator "Trisector" - new studio album from the new trio version of the band. I've read some mixed reviews from the fans that have it already so I am not sure what to expect. I know it won't be like the 'glory days' of the 70's but I know they'll be at least a few songs that'll make it worth being in my collection
No-man "Schoolyard Ghosts" - Finally a new release from this duo of Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree and Blackfield)
Porcupine Tree "Lightbulb Sun[/b] - New remaster and reissue with some bonus cuts, and a 2-disc package of cd and 5.1 dvd-audio...can't wait to crank this one up.
and always more on the to buy list...never seems to get any shorter...oh yeah!

Dig Lazarus Dig is the first NC&TBS's album that I've thought "Meh!" about.
Duff-Man says....I thought Grinderman was dreadful stuff - Nick trying to be something that he isn't anymore - and to me Dig Lazarus Dig is along the same lines...it does not have the "feel" of a Bad Seeds album, does not have anywhere near the quality of writing (both musically and lyrically) that Lyre of Orpheus/Abattoir Blues did. It is more like this is a "Grinderseeds" record. Maybe picking up the guitar again was not the best move for Nick.....oh yeah!

Extra 4 tracks over the '97 reissue and 6 over the original album. Though I'm massively disappointed that they didn't see fit to include 'Der Amboss' this time round, in place of the Visage era 'Frequency 7' and 'Mind Of A Toy (Dance Mix)'.

It is neither ignorance nor music snobbery. It is observation. I have no doubt that you think that Saul Williams is awesome. I was not criticizing him and his potential awesomeness. But the truth is, hip hop is in a horrible state. Maybe it, as a genre, will turn itself around in the next few years (like indie rock has, for example), but I am not hopeful. It's all about the cash these days.
Oh, and I'm not a jerk. Name-calling is against MR forum rules. I don't think Barack Obama would approve. Way to lose all credibility from the very first sentence to the very last word.

I know that you think that you are special because you listen to indie rock (so do I BTW and I love it). What is interesting is that I think the bands that you posted are great! You think that because you listen to indie rock you are on the inside track--that you have found the beautiful amidst all the trash on the airwaves. I say you are no different than anyone else. Dismissing something out of hand without looking below the surface. Eating what you are fed. Soaking up the stereotypes. Hip hop is doing fine--you just have to little bit harder. Pop music is what sucks--all genres. And that is not going to turn itself around as long as there are big bucks to be made off of lowest common denominator entertainment.
Another thing: I'm not even sure that this could be called hip-hop. You are trying to box it in without knowing anything about it. Genres may be necessary evils (in our endless quest to categorize everything), but if we let them influence the way we think of music too much, we will end up missing out on a lot of great things. That said, this album is kind of hard, and I don't expect everyone to like it--but this argument is not just about Saul Williams.
I am almost sorry for calling you a jerk, but I am surrounded by people like you constantly--people who judge too quickly without looking deeper. It puts a dent in my faith in humanity.

Last few week's purchases....
The Teenagers are awesome - Parisian electropop band. All style no substance? Maybe, but if I could write a chorus that good I'd be very happy. (Note: contains some very bad language)
MGMT - One of the hottest bands around at the moment. Will be one of my albums of 2008
Sonic Youth - 1st major label album and only £5? Bargain.
Devon Sproule - Cheerful country/jazz infused album. Very pleasant.
As for Saul Williams... In fairness to Surely it is a terrible album name (IMO). I would however catagorise SW as Slam Poetry rather than Hip-hop (but that's another argument for another thread:p)

I do not think I am special because I listen to Indie Rock. What kind of ridiculous statement is that? I like what I like- and that used to include hip hop. Hip hop is most definitely not doing fine. Hip hop hasn't been doing fine for years. I like this sentence that you used: "And that is not going to turn itself around as long as there are big bucks to be made off of lowest common denominator entertainment.", and I think it totally applies to today's hip hop industry.
On the one hand you're telling me not to allow genres to "influence the way we think of music too much, we will end up missing out on a lot of great things", and then you're telling me that "Pop music is what sucks--all genres"? You're just a walking contradiction, aren't you? And not all Pop music sucks, BTW.
I think that maybe YOU think that you are special. You are a very self-righteous person.
Maybe you shouldn't take the criticism of an album name so personally. You say I shouldn't "dismiss something out of hand without looking below the surface"? Well, that's Saul Williams' own fault for choosing such a stupid name for an album and using such a cliche picture as well. Where's the creativity in that? How is that album cover going to attract me to buy it? That is the point of album covers, you know. For all I know it's the best album I will ever hear, but because of the silliness that is the title, I'll never know.
I wouldn't expect you to be sorry for calling me a jerk. People like you tend to find ways around apologizing for anything.
I most definitely have never been accused of judging too quickly. I put a dent in your faith in humanity? Wow. Because I don't like the name of a Saul Williams album? Drama queen much? Maybe you should go listen to some Emo.
As for Saul Williams... In fairness to Surely it is a terrible album name (IMO). I would however catagorise SW as Slam Poetry rather than Hip-hop (but that's another argument for another thread:p)
Thank you, capoeirista, I appreciate you adding your opinion to this discussion (and without name-calling too! ;))

Despite my having cited Death Cab as my pick for most overrated band awhile back, I may have failed to confess then that I always buy their stuff anyway.
So... well... I just pre-ordered their forthcoming album "Narrow Stairs" -- plunked down 99c at iTunes for one track now, pay the rest later. At over eight minutes, the enticement track provides plenty of time to wonder if I really want to follow them into their indie dark any more, but it's a bit late to wonder this time; iTunes has recorded my click for the whole thing, due out in mid-May.
Other stuff I bought recently includes some languid, samba-tinged covers by Nouvelle Vague on their EP album. I was taken down that path by first hearing "Manner of Speaking" as credits rolled for the film "A Mighty Heart."
Of the several tracks I picked, I like their different (slowed way down!) take on "Making Plans for Nigel" the best. I think I like it better than the XTC original; the sarcasm of the lyric is somehow more successful with the Nouvelle Vague singer's laid-back, simultaneously intimate yet childlike and matter of fact delivery. The slow bossa nova sway is perfect for "... he has his future in British Steel... Nigel's whole future's as good as sealed... (long sigh)... Nigel is happy in his work...." It's not my regular choice of genre, but it's fun for helping reclaim one's own life after work on any night of the week.

For many years I managed a bike shop owned by a major KISS fan. I HATED KISS, I could not stand them. He would come through the shop and, no matter what was playing, would switch it to KISS. He'd stand there for a few like he was actually doing something, tapping foot, then promptly leave.
Then, somehow, having been away from it for a few years now, I found myself occasionally humming a tune (since they had been ingrained into my head through years of abuse). So I finally broke down and got it.

Debating whether to get "Narrow Stairs" by Death Cab For Cutie since the ratings have been mixed...
EDIT: Bought the mp3 album off of Amazon and wow, "Narrow Stairs" is fantastic. The 30 second previews really disappointed me yesterday (plus Pitchfork's review of a 6/10) but I bit the bullet because so many people had raved about it and I am a big DCFC fan. I'm glad I did, it's a really great, balanced album. No songs truly stand out for me and it is no where near as good as "Transatlanticism," but the album is solid and fresh sounding.

Good album? I bought Big Sounds of the Drags ages ago, and haven't really listened much...
It's quite different from his previous works I'd say, but then again, most of his albums each had a different style (Big Beat, then pop/dance, now electro). Maybe you should give it a listen before picking it up.
On a related note, everyone should own the Radio JXL album.

Actually finally bought that on vinyl a few weeks ago. Had it as MP3s since sometime in 2006. Ignored it when it came out in '05, felt really bad about that once I started listening to it—absolutely amazing record. I'll grab it on CD at some point.

Great album. It's funny to see Megadeth continually put out great albums that have not compromised their sound at all while Metallica (who kicked Mustaine out of course) are scrambling to put out another album that is actually accepted by anyone as being at least decent.
Slipknot - All Hope is Gone
You probably either love or hate Slipknot. I fall into the former category. While I may not exactly love every single song, they put out some pretty consistent albums. In particular the song "Psychosocial" just rocks my world in so many different ways. :D

Great album. It's funny to see Megadeth continually put out great albums that have not compromised their sound at all while Metallica (who kicked Mustaine out of course) are scrambling to put out another album that is actually accepted by anyone as being at least decent.
As previously mentioned "Risk" was not exactly a high point in Megadeth's discography and you can't honestly say that "Countdown to Extinction" (what many believe to be their 'sell out' album) or "Youthanasia" have the same sound as "So Far, So Good... So What!" or "Rust in Peace". "Cryptic Writings" had a few tracks I really liked, but IMO, it wasn't until "The World Needs a Hero" that Megadeth started to get back to its 'old school' sound. Of course a band can experiment w/their sound w/o selling out. I'd rather see a band trying something new and have it be 'meh' than to have them churn out the same thing album after album. As long as the band is honest w/themselves and creates the music they want to create they haven't sold out, IMO.
