Another emac woe!

Im trying to get it online via ethernet

It works fine connected directly to the router (the wireless routers ethernet ports or directly into the cable modem) but i can get the bloody thing to go on the internet when connected via ethernet to my imac (see below)

Internet sharing is on (from airport to ethernet) and basically everything is turned on on both to try and get it to work but the emac is having none of it.. any ideas?

On the emac, are you getting a good IP address? Can you ping the Imac?
 
what would a good i.p address be?

Im not sure how to ping the imac.. Im not entirely sure they're connecting well at all

both on leopard
 
infact on the emac if i set the location to automatic it says no ip address?

"the status of your network connection cannot be determined"

both imac and emac can connect to the router via this ethernet cable.. so both ethernet ports work and so does the cable

Imac:
system Pref -> Network - >Airport -> Advanced -> TCP/IP and take note of the IP address that its being assigned.

EMAC
Utilities -> Network Utility -> Ping and enter IP address of the IMAC
 
i used terminal, typed ping and the imac's i.p address gathered from the network window

now the emac is giving me an endless string of ping results in terminal..

so i guess that works?!

You respond fast.....😛
When you terminate, it should state packets sent and how many lost. Something like 0% lost...or maybe 100% received.

Try it vice versa also, ping the Emac from the Imac.
 
well i cant get a ping from the imac's assigned i.p address by the wireless router

but the imac gets a ping response 0% loss from the emac using the ip address which the emac gives me in the network window..

the emac gets a 0% loss from the imac using the ip address which the imac gives in the network window

so they are connected ethernet but the emac cant find the imac's airport?
the imac has its sharing turned on!

Ok, so both computers are detecting each other, good.


Could you just point out the IP address of the Emac please?

No worries, work is quiet anyway.

Ok, I'm just gonna look around for a computer, and im gonna see if i can share it's internet connection.

In the meantime, on the Emac, goto the network settings page, and click on the little spinning gear near the bottom left corner, next to the +-. Select Set Service Order, and drag ethernet to the top. Click Apply
 
cheers bud, im going to boot into windows (sigh) and see if the emac can use the imac's internet when in windows..
 
Just to check, since I didn't see this mentioned, you do have the firewall on the computer doing the sharing (the iMac, if I'm reading correctly) turned off, right? Since it won't work in Windows I'm assuming it's something else, but if you forget to at least open the appropriate ports on the computer doing the sharing (turning it off entirely is just more certain), you won't be able to do anything with your connection.
 
Ok, I just set up a sharing scenario like you have. An Imac Alu sharing its Airport internet via Ethernet to a macbook.

the macbook was assigned a 192.168 .x .x address, so this is something that we have to get sorted first. The Emac is not receiving a valid IP address, even tho its being detected via ping.

****ing firewall. haha

I feel like quite the douche 😀

I set the firewall on both to specfic services and apps. - is that going to stop any nasties heading my way (not that we get that many...)

With regards to the IP address.. its now receiving a 192.168..

thanks again 🙂 ive got around 500mb of updates for the emac to get through now. battle on
