External drive partition and format

Just got a 1 TB external drive. Wondering how should I partition and format it as...
FAT32 is out of question because of its limited file size.
NTFS would be best for compatibility, but writing to NTFS under OS X is not as stable/fast as I would like it to be (using Paragon).
HFS+ is a good overall choice on my main system (using MacDrive in Windows), but provides worst compatibility for most other computers.
Main purpose for the drive is for storage, I won't be using TM with this drive.

What does everyone think? How did you set up yours?
 
If you're going to be using it with Macs exclusively, HFS is the obvious choice. If you're going to be using it with both Macs and Windows machines, I'd say the choice you should use depends on where you'll use it more, and also whether you'll be using it on Windows machines without MacDrive and/or Macs without Paragon.

If that still doesn't help, I'd go with NTFS, purely for the widest possible compatibility and large file support.
